Job description
Key Responsibilities


  • Field Research & Excavation: Conduct fieldwork to locate excavate and collect fossils. This involves traveling to excavation sites identifying fossil-bearing rock layers and carefully extracting specimens for analysis.


  • Laboratory Analysis: Analyze collected fossils using various techniques such as comparative anatomy radiometric dating and scanning electron microscopy. Work with geological and biological data to interpret the age environment and behavior of ancient organisms.


  • Fossil Identification & Classification: Classify fossils and determine their significance contributing to the understanding of paleobiological and evolutionary processes.


  • Data Interpretation & Research: Conduct research on fossil evidence to interpret the ecological and evolutionary aspects of ancient life. Collaborate with other scientists to create theories on species development extinction and environmental conditions.


  • Publication & Presentation: Prepare and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals presenting results at scientific conferences or public outreach events. Share discoveries and insights with the scientific community and the general public.


  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Work with other researchers geologists biologists and curators to analyze and interpret data. Contribute to collaborative projects on fossil-based research and the development of new scientific knowledge.


  • Preservation & Curation: Assist in the preservation cataloging and curation of fossil specimens within museum or institutional collections. Ensure proper documentation and handling of specimens to maintain their integrity.


  • Public Engagement: Participate in outreach programs giving lectures or conducting tours to educate the public about paleontology and fossil discoveries. Engage with educational institutions to promote awareness and inspire future generations of scientists.


  • Grant Writing & Funding: Assist in writing proposals for research grants and funding to support fieldwork laboratory analysis and other paleontological projects.



Requirements


  • Educational Qualifications: Ph.D. or Masters degree in Paleontology Geology Biology or a related field. A Ph.D. is often preferred for senior research roles.


  • Field Experience: Extensive experience in paleontological fieldwork including excavation and fossil collection. Familiarity with a variety of field techniques and tools for excavation and documentation.


  • Laboratory Skills: Strong background in laboratory analysis fossil preparation and various analytical techniques such as CT scanning, electron microscopy or isotopic dating.


  • Research & Analysis: Demonstrated ability to analyze complex scientific data and draw meaningful conclusions from fossil records. A strong foundation in evolutionary theory stratigraphy and paleoecology is essential.


  • Communication Skills: Excellent writing and verbal communication skills to prepare research papers reports and presentations. Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to both scientific and non-scientific audiences.


  • Attention to Detail: Strong observational skills with the ability to identify and classify fossil specimens accurately.


  • Problem-Solving Skills: Creative thinking and ability to approach research questions from multiple perspectives to solve complex scientific problems.


  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams collaborating with other scientists curators and field researchers.



Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in a specialized area of paleontology (e.g. vertebrate paleontology invertebrate paleontology paleobotany etc.).


  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis of fossil sites.


  • Previous experience with fossil reconstruction or digital modeling techniques.


  • Knowledge of modern preservation and curatorial methods for fossil specimens.


  • Familiarity with national or international fossil regulations and guidelines.



Working Conditions


  • Fieldwork: This position may require travel to remote excavation sites sometimes under challenging conditions. Fieldwork may involve physical labor such as digging lifting and carrying equipment.


  • Laboratory Work: Majority of work will be performed in laboratories or research institutions. Exposure to lab equipment fossil specimens and preservation chemicals.


  • Work Hours: Field seasons may require irregular hours including weekends during excavation periods. Laboratory research is typically conducted during regular working hours though extended hours may be needed for specific research deadlines.
