Responds to the medical emergency calls, drives to the scene and provides basic life support to the victims before they are transported to the hospital.

Evaluates the nature and extent of illness/injury to determine the right course of actions, conducts patient assessment, including interpretation of ECG.

Provides medical aid such as AED, CPR, prevents spinal damage, ventilates, controls severe bleeding, prevents shock, bandages wounds, etc., to stabilize patient conditions.

Administers activated charcoal, oral glucose, and oxygen.

Constantly assesses the patient enroute to the emergency facility and administers additional care as indicated or directed by medical control.

Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment, replenishes first‑aid supplies; restocks all supplies in the ambulance and replaces used blankets, linens and other supplies; cleans all equipment following disinfecting protocols.

Continuously reassures the patient enroute to the emergency facility.

Assists all EMT paramedics in efficient advanced life support care.

Performs direct illness/injury assessment, provides basic emergency pre‑hospital patient care to the ill and injured prior to and during ambulance transfer, and transfers information to the receiving facility.

Maintains operational and functional readiness of ambulance units, medical and other equipment to ensure continuity of emergency services.

Works closely with communications officers, field supervisors, emergency department and other hospital personnel, the police department, the fire department, and other individuals to deliver basic emergency and non‑emergency medical services to the public.

Responds to calls from the communications dispatcher, uses appropriate radio communication skills, reads GPS maps, drives safely to and from the scene, takes the most expeditious route, and observes traffic ordinances and regulations to locate patients needing EMS services in the shortest response time possible.

Assists in lifting, carrying, and transporting patients to the ambulance and on to a medical facility, reassures patients and bystanders, avoids mishandling and undue haste, and provides additional emergency care following established protocols.

Follows established departmental policies, procedures and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards in performing duties.

Inspects and cleans the ambulance and equipment; reviews and restocks all medical equipment to ensure completeness and operational readiness, in consultation and collaboration with the field supervisor, and in compliance with safety and infection control regulations.

Conducts scene size‑up.

Conducts primary and secondary patient examinations.

Takes and records vital signs.

Utilizes non‑invasive diagnostic devices.

• Properly uses oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway devices.

Opens and maintains the airway by positioning the patient’s head.

Provides CPR and rescue breathing for infants, children, and adults.

Provides care for soft tissue injuries and controls bleeding through direct pressure.

Provides care for suspected fractures.

Immobilizes using a spinal board, cervical collar, and splints.

Assists with pre‑hospital childbirth.

Calms down the victim’s family members.

Ventilates with a non‑invasive positive pressure delivery device.

Provides care for suspected shock, including the use of a pneumatic anti‑shock garment.

Obtains capillary blood specimens for blood glucose monitoring.

Administers epinephrine by subcutaneous injection or automatic injection device for anaphylaxis.

Administers aspirin for suspected myocardial infarction.

Operates a bag‑valve mask device with reservoir.

Performs cardiac defibrillation with an automatic external defibrillator.

Performs tracheobronchial tube suctioning on an endotracheally intubated patient.

Understands the use of body substance isolation.

Understands basic medical‑legal principles.

Functions within the scope of care as defined by state, regional, and local regulatory agencies.

Complies with regulations on the handling of the deceased, notifies authorities, and arranges for protection of property and evidence at the scene.

Ensures the vehicle is in proper mechanical condition.

Maintains familiarity with specialized equipment used by the service.

Attends continuing education and refresher training programs.

Completes a clear and accurate pre‑hospital emergency care report for all patient contacts and provides a copy of the report to the senior EMT.
