Job description

Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; and performing screening procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Verifies test requisitions by comparing the information with the Laboratory information system log, bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
  • Verifies patient by reading patient identification.
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venepunctures, fingerstick and infant heel pricks.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using an aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialling, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Prepares specimens for transportation, including labelling vials accurately and matching blood specimens to patients.
  • Orders laboratory supplies as required.
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; and identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, and complying with legal and health regulations.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying the supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations.
  • Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Joint Commission International (JCI) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards.
  • Enhances Laboratory Department and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

  • Completion of an approved certified phlebotomy program, or
  • Certificate in the field of Health Science (minimum of one (1) year course duration)
