Job summary

A multi-national engineering firm is looking for an experienced professional in Johannesburg to coordinate engineering and design functions in projects related to materials handling in the mining industry. Candidates should have a BSc, BEng, or relevant diploma, and possess 10-15 years of design experience, coupled with strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills. This role includes responsibilities such as supervising teams, conducting site inspections, and liaising with clients to ensure project specifications are met.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience in materials handling design in the mining and minerals processing industry.
  • Experience in both design office and field work with materials handling equipment.
  • Well-developed computer skills and knowledge of relevant software applications.
  • Understanding of South African and common international standards in the sector.

Job description
Ma in Purpose of Role

Coordinateand supervise engineering and design functions within a project

Study context associated with materials handlingequipment

Providecoaching and guidance to less experienced staff (engineers and designers aswell as knowledge of systems and procedures

Undertake Technical reviews/audits to ensure thatdesigns are in accordance with project / study requirements and companyobjectives

Assist senior engineers with the designs ofstudies and medium /large projects

Complyingwith and actively contributing to the Wood Health, Safety and Environmental HSEpolicies, manuals and procedures

Input to capital estimatesincluding quantity calculations and review and set man-hour budgets forengineering and drafting

Recommend engagement of additionalmanning as required

Monitor the progress andperformance of project discipline teams

Give input and provide feedback andsupport where necessary

Oversee and manage design scope changes

Provide feedback to the Project Engineering Manageron design progress budget and schedule

Reviewing and approving Supplierdata

Performsite inspections, functionality testing and commissioning documentation

Provide technical support to the onsite constructionteams, projects department and estimating department

Analysefeedback from fabricators and construction personnel to improve performance

Provide technical and commercial direction toengineers in relation to design quality, design schedules and design budgets

Review feasibility studiesdocumentation and estimates.

Assist engineering management to assess the suitabilityof staff and identify the key resources for specific projects/studies

Drive professional development ofdirect reports and other less experienced staff members

Ensure designs produced are optimalin terms of maintainability, serviceability, equipment operating cost and safeoperation

Ensure design engineering standardsare maintained and adhered to on all projects

Provide technical design guidance to Project staff onvarious aspects of design

Reviewequipment tenders and produce technical adjudications /recommendations

Reviewvendor documentation for compliance with project / study specifications.

Attend factory acceptance tests andprovide input to vendor’s test documentation

Assist with plant installation andcommissioning.

Liaise with client to ensure thatdesign is in accordance with agreed requirements.

Conductregular design group meetings within a project / study context

Provide timely reports regarding all discussions held andprogress made.

Ensure all correspondence are recorded

Allocate work and provideassistance to discipline engineers and designers on projects / studies

Input into progress reports, including listing achievementsand highlighting issues as required

Qualifications

BSc, BEng or B.Tech or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

ECSA registered

Compitencies, Skills and Experience

Minimum of 10 to 15 years Materials handling designexperience in the mining and minerals processing industry

Experience in a design office and field associatedwork with materials handling equipment

Well-developed computer skills and knowledge of word, databases spreadsheets and discipline related application software

Technical Competence – in terms of core engineeringtheory from first principles and ability to extend theory to new and complexequipment
