A leading life insurance company in Johannesburg is seeking a Junior Actuarial Analyst to support financial reporting and actuarial valuations. This role involves working closely with actuaries, contributing to regulatory submissions, and maintaining actuarial data quality. Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, a minimum of 2 years’ experience, and strong analytical skills. Proficiency in Excel and SQL, as well as modelling in R or Python, is required.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable progress toward actuarial qualification with ASSA or recognized body.
  • Minimum 2 years’ actuarial experience in life insurance.
  • Exposure to SAM, IFRS 17 or other regulatory frameworks preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in calculating technical provisions and preparing valuation reports.
  • Document actuarial assumptions and methodologies.
  • Support regulatory submissions and statutory returns.
  • Help maintain and enhance actuarial data warehouse.
  • Work with large datasets to identify trends and create validation metrics.
  • Build and maintain ETL processes from core business systems.
  • Produce forecasts, stress tests, and scenario analyses.
  • Maintain and update models used for reserving and forecasting.
  • Provide analytical support for product reviews and business planning.
  • Communicate results to stakeholders, prepare presentations for management.
  • Liaise with finance, auditors, and external actuarial functions.

Summary

Join a life insurer committed to financial responsibility and innovation. We are seeking a Junior Actuarial Analyst to support our Actuarial Valuations team and will be responsible for financial reporting, reserving, capital monitoring, and strategic insights.

Role Overview

As an Actuarial Analyst, you will work closely with business and senior actuaries to support the production of actuarial valuations and regulatory returns (e.g., SAM, IFRS 17). You will also contribute to experience investigations, assumption setting, reserve movement analysis, financial projections for budgeting, capital and ORSA reporting, data validation and maintenance of a central actuarial data warehouse.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in calculating technical provisions and preparing internal valuation reports.
  • Document actuarial assumptions and methodologies.
  • Support regulatory submissions and statutory returns (QRT, ORSA).
  • Help maintain and enhance the actuarial data warehouse, ensuring data quality, integrity and consistency.
  • Work with large datasets to identify trends, anomalies and create validation metrics.
  • Build and maintain the ETL process from core business systems.
  • Produce forecasts, stress tests and scenario analyses using actuarial models.
  • Maintain and update models used for reserving and forecasting.
  • Provide analytical support for product reviews, business planning, management reporting and risk‑based assessments.
  • Communicate results clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders, prepare presentations and reports for senior management.
  • Liaise with finance, auditors, external actuarial functions, risk and business operations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science or a similar SAQA‑accredited discipline.
  • Demonstrable progress toward actuarial qualification (exemptions or subjects passed) with ASSA or other recognised international body.
  • Minimum 2 years’ actuarial work experience in a life insurance environment (e.g., financial reporting, valuations).
  • Exposure to SAM, IFRS 17 or other regulatory frameworks preferred.
