The Opportunity
Are you passionate about marine insurance and eager to advance your career? Join our team as a Underwriter in the Marine sector with a focus on Cargo, Cargo Liability, Marine Liability and Fine Art and Specie business. You will analyze and underwrite new and renewal business, engaging with the market and providing exceptional customer service. Utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework, you will handle assignments of moderate technical complexity under limited supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations
- Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (brokers & agents) to support business retention and new business acquisition
- Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities, qualifying accounts to meet the organization’s appetite
- Make broker / customer and on-site calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose
- Promote the organization’s marine products and services to increase penetration with brokers and agents
- Participate in pipeline meetings and marketing presentations to assigned brokers and agents
- Calculate target prices accurately using underwriting tools and negotiate terms and conditions
- Service accounts, handle declinations / cancellations, and resolve technical problems by referring to policies and procedures
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a focus on maritime studies, supply chain management and / or 2 to 5 years of experience in marine insurance either on underwriting, broking or claims
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and legal and regulatory guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to effectively assess risk and function in a team environment
- Strong skills in relationship building, active listening, and win-win negotiating
- Strong presentation skills and a service-oriented approach
- Solid knowledge of processing methods, workflow procedures, and basic insurance underwriting and regulations
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression through positions of increasing responsibility
