Job Description

Location: St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory (SJINML), Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI)

The Marine Biology and Ecology Group at TMSI in SJINML invites applications for full-time Research Assistants to elucidate marine invertebrate biodiversity of intertidal and subtidal habitats. The contract appointment is initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for a further year. Successful applicants will join an existing team of researchers responsible for establishing high-resolution biological baselines for marine environmental assessment and monitoring.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sample collection in the field
  • Sample sorting/live observations in the laboratory under the microscope
  • Sample preservation, identification, curation and database management
  • Report writing
  • Purchasing of equipment and consumables
  • Equipment maintenance and housekeeping
  • Management of volunteers
  • Ensuring safety of personnel
  • Any other duties as and when assigned.
Qualifications
  • B.Sc. in Biology or equivalent
  • Have an eye for detail
  • Be willing to work flexible hours including weekends and public holidays

Candidates with experience in molecular sequencing, as well as collecting and examining small (less than 1 cm) invertebrates is an advantage. They are also expected to be highly motivated and be able to work independently and as a team, to achieve research goals.
