Job description
Junior Photonics Test Engineer
Core Technical Team – Sunyu Photonics Pte Ltd
About Sunyu Photonics

Sunyu Photonics builds machines that enable photonics chips to be tested at the wafer level. Our systems help customers move new silicon photonics ideas from the lab into real, manufacturable products.

The photonics industry is evolving rapidly. Many test problems do not yet have standard answers. Progress depends on engineers who can experiment, adapt, and engineer new solutions.

At Sunyu, photonics test engineers are at the center of everything we do. They do not only run tests. They help design test methods, improve processes, and participate in the development of the systems themselves. Real customer problems drive our machine design, and test engineers are the ones closest to those problems.

If you want to work on real technology, solve real problems, and help push photonics forward, read on.

About the Role

We are recruiting a junior member for our core technical team – Photonics Test Engineering.

This role is ideal for fresh graduates who enjoy scientific investigation, hands‑on experimentation, and solving real engineering problems.

Photonics Test Engineering will be your core responsibility. You will be trained to perform wafer‑level photonics measurements and gradually take ownership of real, customer‑facing technical work. You will also participate in system development, working closely with senior engineers to improve both test capability and machine performance.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a bright junior engineer with a strong scientific mindset.

You learn fast and deeply, and you are genuinely curious about how things work. You like to investigate problems, test ideas, and understand root causes. You pay attention to details.

You are execution‑oriented. You care about making ideas work in reality, not just discussing them. You are comfortable working with uncertainty and learning through hands‑on experimentation.

What You Will Do

Perform wafer‑level photonics measurements on silicon photonics devices (e.g. optical alignment, insertion loss measurement, polarization control, automated test flows).

Work closely with senior engineers to:

  • Develop and refine test methodologies
  • Troubleshoot complex photonics test problems
  • Improve test stability, repeatability, and throughput

Participate in system development, including:

  • Develop test algorithms
  • Improve system capability
  • Provide first‑hand feedback for machine design

Support customer‑facing activities, including:

  • Test Demo & Services
  • System installation
  • Commissioning and verification
  • Customer training (on‑site and remote)

(Local and overseas travel may be required)

Contribute to engineering work where test results directly influence customer decisions and project timelines.

Impact of Your Work

You will experience real satisfaction when customers at the frontier of the semiconductor and silicon photonics industry recognize your work. Your work enables new photonics technologies to be tested, validated, and scaled—pushing the cutting edge of the semiconductor industry forward.

Training & Team Culture
  • You will be trained — prior industrial experience is not required
  • You are self‑driven to learn a broad range of domain knowledge and skills
  • We are a small, fast‑moving team that works closely and supports each other
  • You will receive direct mentorship and hands‑on guidance
  • Most learning happens through real systems, real wafers, and real customer problems
Growth & Special Technical Missions

As you grow, you may take on additional technical responsibilities, depending on your strengths and interests, such as:

  • Hardware development (precision mechanics, scientific equipment, hardware integration, etc.)
  • Software development (automation, system integration, etc.)
  • Algorithms and data analysis (numerical methods, data visualization, etc.)
  • Machine learning (machine vision, outlier detection, etc.)

These build on top of your core role as a photonics test engineer.

Requirements
  1. Degree in Physics, or a related science / engineering discipline (Background in silicon photonics or semiconductor device is a strong advantage).
  2. Fresh graduates are welcome.
  3. At least one strong technical inclination, such as:
    • Experimental / applied physics
    • Hardware development
    • Software development
    • Algorithms and numerical methods
    • Data analysis or modelling
  4. Curious, investigative, and detail‑oriented, with a strong desire to understand how things work.
  5. Honest, reliable, and accountable, with a strong sense of ownership.
  6. Able to understand team direction, align with shared goals, break down tasks, and take shared responsibility for success.
  7. Able to perform hands‑on laboratory and system‑level work.
  8. Able to deliver results in a fast‑moving environment.
  9. Willing to support customers and travel when required.
  10. Willing to work overtime when project needs arise; overtime will be compensated with time off.
