An AI governance organization in Mexico City seeks a Research Assistant to support cutting-edge research in AI regulation and international law. The role involves advanced legal analysis, writing for publications, and project coordination. Candidates must hold an advanced degree and demonstrate experience in legal/policy research. Fluency in English is a must, and proficiency in additional languages is preferred. This position requires exceptional analytical abilities and discretion in handling sensitive information.

Position Summary

The Research Assistant will work closely with a senior scholar–practitioner in AI governance and international law, supporting high‑level research, writing, and project coordination across academic, policy, and multilateral workstreams. The role requires exceptional analytical rigor, writing skills, discretion, and reliability; only highly qualified candidates with proven experience in these areas should apply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct advanced legal and policy research on topics related to AI regulation, international law, and global governance, producing well‑structured memos and background notes.
  • Draft and edit text for academic publications, policy reports, talks, and briefings, including careful source management and citation.
  • Maintain organised research files, bibliographies, and document workflows; track deadlines across multiple projects and ensure timely delivery.
  • Provide preparatory materials for meetings and events (e.g., short briefs, stakeholder overviews), and assist with light logistics and follow‑up documentation.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally, anticipating needs, flagging issues early, and operating with strict confidentiality.
Required Qualifications (Do not apply if you do not meet these)
  • Completed or near‑completed advanced degree (LL.M., MA, MSc, MPP, or PhD‑track) in law, international relations, public policy, STS, or a closely related field.
  • Qualified lawyer in at least one jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrated experience (not just coursework) in legal / policy AI research and writing: at least one substantial paper, report, or publication you can share.
  • Proven expertise in international peace and security issues.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; ability to draft polished, publication‑ready text with minimal supervision.
  • Strong command of at least one additional language, with preference for Spanish; French or another language is a plus.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver high‑quality work under tight deadlines.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and comfort handling sensitive or non‑public information.
Preferred Profile
  • Familiarity with debates on AI governance or digital regulation.
  • Prior experience in an international, governmental, or research institution.
  • IHL and IHRL expertise.
