A leading philanthropic organization in La Paz, Baja California Sur is looking for a Senior Program Officer for Land & Water Stewardship. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in land, water, or climate resilience programs, possess a strategic vision, and be bilingual in Spanish and English. Responsibilities include implementing stewardship strategies, managing grantmaking, and engaging with local communities. THE ROLE

The Senior Program Officer (SPO) for Land & Water Stewardship is a leadership role that drives AIF's land and water strategy at the intersection of community, business, investment, and philanthropy. The position advances watershed health, sustainable land management, and enabling conditions that build long-term resilience.

The SPO brings strategic vision, grantmaking expertise, and convening skills to align community, funders, and technical experts, scaling pilots into regional models while maintaining a strong local presence in Baja California Sur.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

A leader with strategic experience to scale pilots to regional models, align government, community and funders, and bring technical expertise in science and water management.

  • Minimum 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in land, water, or climate resilience programs, philanthropy, or nonprofit management.
  • Deep knowledge of arid, desert, urban, and coastal contexts, with proven success in working with communities on developing solutions.
  • Strong presence on the ground in Baja California Sur or similar regions.
  • Bilingual in both Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience supervising and mentoring team members.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Senior Program Officer will bring integrity, inclusion, and a balance of strategic vision with on-the-ground impact. They are a coalition-builder across sectors, skilled at turning science and community priorities into practical action.

Preferred expertise includes areas such as urban and water systems, climate adaptation, food systems, or environmental law within a justice framework. Above all, the candidate is committed to locally grounded, science-informed solutions.

In the first year, success will mean advancing watershed health in Baja California Sur, establishing institutional partnerships, implementing sustainable land practices with communities, and shaping enabling conditions for long-term resilience.

LOCATION

This position is based in La Paz, Baja California Sur, with up to 35% travel.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Strategic Leadership
    • Implement a comprehensive land and water stewardship strategy integrating community priorities, scientific expertise, investment, and policy.
  2. Grantmaking and Program Management
    • Design and manage grants, investments, and partnerships advancing watershed health, sustainable land use, wastewater management, and climate adaptation.
    • Oversee program budgets, outcomes measurement, and compliance.
    • Support multi-year and opportunistic funding strategies for emerging priorities.
  3. Community Engagement and Convening
    • Maintain deep engagement with local communities and policymakers in Baja California Sur.
    • Advance sustainable land management with local communities.
    • Design and facilitate public forums and exchanges to build trust and foster collaboration around land and water stewardship.
  4. Evaluation and Learning
    • Develop and monitor impact metrics tied to AIF strategies.
    • Share learnings across AIF and partner networks to inform continuous improvement and inspire broader adoption of stewardship models.
    • Systems, climate change adaptation, and mitigation.
    • Water scarcity, desert, arid, urban, and coastal ecosystem management.
