Job Title: Project Engineer (Industrial Energy Systems)

Company: SON s.r.l.

Location: Milan, Italy (Headquarters)

Reports to: Senior Project Manager / Head of Engineering

About SON s.r.l.

SON s.r.l. is a leading engineering provider specializing in the design, manufacturing, and installation of advanced thermal energy solutions. Our core business includes Waste Heat Recovery Units (WHRU), Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), biomass plants, WTE and fired boilers. We deliver "turnkey" projects for industrial clients, helping them improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, and meet environmental targets.

We are looking for a highly motivated Project Engineer with a strong technical background and a clear ambition to grow. This is not just an engineering role; it is the first step on a structured career path to becoming a Project Manager at SON.

Your Role: The Engineer-to-Manager Track

As a Project Engineer, you will be the technical backbone of our projects, ensuring that all engineering aspects are executed flawlessly from design to commissioning. You will work directly under the guidance of a Senior Project Manager, supporting them on large-scale projects while progressively taking on project management responsibilities.

Your time will be split between core technical engineering (approx. 60-70%) and project management development (approx. 30-40%), with the goal of transitioning to a full Project Manager role.

Core Engineering Responsibilities
  • Technical Design & Review: Assist in developing and reviewing technical documentation, including Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), general arrangement drawings, and technical specifications for equipment (boilers, heat exchangers, auxiliaries, etc.).
  • Procurement Support: Collaborate with the procurement team to prepare technical requisitions, evaluate vendor bids, and ensure supplied equipment meets all project specifications.
  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure all project activities adhere to relevant engineering standards, safety regulations (e.g., PED), and client requirements.
  • Site & Commissioning Support: Provide engineering support during the construction, installation, and commissioning phases, troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.
  • Documentation: Prepare technical reports, as‑built documentation, and operations & maintenance (O&M) manuals.
Project Management Development Path

This is where you'll build your future. You will be actively mentored and trained to:

  • Assist in Project Planning: Help develop project schedules (Gantt charts), identify critical path activities, and define project milestones using tools like MS Project.
  • Support Cost & Budget Control: Learn to track project costs, monitor budgets vs. actuals, and assist in preparing change orders.
  • Manage Stakeholders: Act as a key technical point of contact for clients, vendors, and internal teams, preparing and presenting regular progress reports.
  • Manage Risk: Participate in risk assessment workshops and help maintain the project risk register.
  • Take Ownership: Start by managing smaller, well‑defined project sub‑packages or internal projects from start to finish.
Qualifications & Skills
Required (The Foundation)
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical, Energy, or Chemical Engineering (or a related technical field).
  • 2-5 years of experience in an engineering role, preferably within the industrial plant, power generation, oil & gas, or heavy manufacturing sectors.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and industrial processes (steam systems, combustion, etc.).
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Fluent in Italian and possess strong professional‑level English (written and verbal) for dealing with international clients and suppliers.
Required (The Ambition)
  • A clear, demonstrable desire to build a career in Project Management.
  • Exceptional organizational skills: You must be able to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and priorities effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills: You can clearly explain complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proactive & Problem‑Solving Mindset: You don't wait to be told what to do; you anticipate problems and propose solutions.
Nice to Have
  • On‑site or commissioning experience.
  • Familiarity with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6).
  • Knowledge of industry‑specific regulations (e.g., PED, ASME, ATEX).
What We Offer
  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
  • A structured career and mentorship program designed to transition you from Project Engineer to Project Manager.
  • The opportunity to work on complex, high‑value, "turnkey" projects in the growing sustainable energy and heat recovery sector.
  • Support for professional certifications, including the Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • A dynamic, expert team in a company with a strong reputation for engineering excellence.
