HSE Director

We are currently seeking a highly experienced and motivated HSE Director to lead our Health, Safety & Environment department. Reporting to the General Manager, this strategic role is responsible for the implementation, oversight, and continuous improvement of the company’s HSE Management System, ensuring compliance with legal and corporate standards and promoting a culture of safety, health, and environmental responsibility.

Main Responsibilities
  • Implement, maintain, and continuously monitor the HSE Management System, including all related plans, policies, and procedures, to ensure full compliance with applicable legislation and internal standards.
  • Promote a strong and proactive HSE culture throughout the organization, encouraging personal accountability for safety and environmental care at all levels, from senior management to shop floor personnel.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory authorities, ensuring accurate interpretation and application of national HSE laws (including full responsibility as RSPP under Italian Legislative Decree 81 / 2008).
  • Identify, assess, and manage risks and hazards associated with both internal and contractor activities, ensuring that appropriate prevention and mitigation measures are in place and effective.
  • Ensure a high level of emergency preparedness by developing robust emergency plans, ensuring resource availability, conducting regular training, and leading emergency drills.
  • Oversee occupational health surveillance programs, in close collaboration with the company’s medical advisor, based on risk assessment findings and legal requirements.
  • Ensure HSE compliance among contractors and vendors, and integrate HSE requirements into contractual documentation and procurement processes.
  • Plan, coordinate, and follow up on internal and third‑party HSE audits.
  • Lead investigations of accidents and near‑misses using structured root‑cause analysis methodologies, ensuring that lessons are learned and corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  • Track and support the execution of all HSE‑related improvement projects, ensuring alignment with company goals and timely delivery.
  • Communicate HSE policies, initiatives, and results clearly and consistently across all levels of the organization.
  • Develop and implement the annual HSE training plan to ensure legal compliance.
  • Prepare and deliver detailed HSE performance reports and KPIs.
  • Support the integration of HSE and ESG strategies, collaborating with other departments on ESG‑related initiatives by contributing HSE expertise and data.
Legal Responsibilities
  • Hold legal responsibility under Italian Law D.Lgs. 81 / 2008 as HSE Representative (RSPP).
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Certified RSPP (in compliance with current regulatory updates).
  • At least 10 years of experience in HSE leadership roles within industrial or chemical environments.
  • In‑depth knowledge of Italian HSE regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 & 45001 management systems.
  • Excellent command of English (spoken and written); French is a plus.
  • Strong leadership and people management capabilities.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving mindset, with the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
  • Skilled in conducting incident investigations and root‑cause analyses.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills across all organizational levels.
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Strong alignment with corporate values, ethical standards, and sustainability principles.
