Senior Lead for Geospatial and Remote Sensing Analytics - Food, Land, and Water Program
This is a hybrid position requiring 8 days per month in the office. Candidates must be based in our Jakarta office and possess existing work authorization in Indonesia; the organization cannot sponsor visa work for this role.
Program Overview
World Resources Institute Indonesia is an independent research organization dedicated to sustainability, economic opportunity, and human well‑being. The Food‑Land‑Water (FLW) Program aims to protect forests and peatland across Indonesia, ensuring climate goals, livelihoods, and biodiversity. Nature‑based solutions (NbS) are central to this strategy, including research, policy advocacy, and the creation of community practices. The Southeast Asia Climate and Nature‑based Solution (SCeNe) Coalition partners with NGOs to scale NbS through three workstreams: identifying investment opportunities, showcasing high‑integrity projects, and supporting access to carbon finance. EPISTEM provides an open‑source landscape monitoring technology, while the ASEAN‑NbS Tool advances inclusive, climate‑resilient NbS across ASEAN, incorporating geospatial methodologies and MRV frameworks.

The Senior Lead will drive NbS program initiatives such as the SCeNe Coalition, the ASEAN‑NbS Tool, and EPISTEM. Responsibilities include enhancing the NbS Tool, developing methodologies for harmonized land cover maps, and delivering open‑source geospatial analytics to inform policy. The role reports to the NbS Manager, coordinating with geospatial analysts, consortium members, and financing leads. The position is based in Jakarta with a flexible hybrid model and travel as required. The role supports WRI’s DEI commitment by integrating equity across work and culture.
What You Will Do
Research (50%)
- Lead geospatial research to assess, map, and monitor NbS, improving data quality, selecting MRV indicators, enhancing delivery platforms like the NbS Tool, and developing use cases.
- Lead research, analysis, and data management on spatial analysis, remote sensing, and related research topics.
- Lead geospatial data and analytics to support dashboard application(s) as a main product of related projects.
- Supervise junior staff on thematic map production, statistical analysis, data visualizations, and MRV indicators for NbS.
- Lead geospatial data and analytics research activities for FLW and NbS, informing decision‑making.
- Lead development of geospatial data and analytics processing and documentation standards for NbS‑MRV across agriculture, forestry, peatland, and mangrove ecosystems.
- Liaise with WRI Indonesia’s RDI team for research and knowledge product outputs.
Program Management Responsibilities (20%)
- Coordinate GIS‑related work across consortium members, NbS Sub‑Cluster, and FLW Cluster.
- Provide leadership in conducting spatial analysis for NbS across Southeast Asia.
- Develop detailed implementation plan of the project particularly on geospatial research component.
- Document project implementation with WRI Indonesia Operation team in accordance with policies and regulations.
- Lead geospatial data collection and develop project reports with the Project Lead/s for monitoring, evaluation, and donor reporting.
Outreach and Stakeholder Engagement (20%)
- Support execution of engagement and partnership strategy, managing relationships with ASEAN Member States, national and local governments, and CSOs.
- Represent WRI Indonesia in relevant international and national events related to forest monitoring.
- Lead blogpost and brief writing, and conduct media interviews in coordination with NbS Managers and FLW Director.
- Liaise with WRI Indonesia communication team for communication‑related products and events.
Fundraising / Grant Management (10%)
- Support the NbS Manager and FLW Director to develop proposals for fundraising to ensure sustainability of NbS Financing sub‑cluster.
- Coordinate data collection and develop project reports with the NbS Sub‑Cluster for monitoring, evaluation, and donor reporting.

What You Will Need
- Bachelor’s degree in geodesy, geomatics, informatics, geography, or related field.
- Minimum 6 years of full‑time geospatial analysis experience using GIS software.
- Extensive experience in operating Google Earth Engine and Python for large‑scale geospatial and remote sensing workflows.
- Proven experience in carbon standards (Verra, Gold Standard, CDM, or jurisdictional REDD+).
- Strong knowledge in spatial analysis for forestry and land‑use planning.
- Ability to support discrete research project elements with limited managerial guidance.
- Ability to define research questions with manager guidance.
- Strong writing skills for knowledge and research communications.
- Ability to communicate ideas and findings effectively to various audiences using compelling presentation skills.
- Strong team player with cross‑department collaboration.
- Ability to manage professional relationships across all levels and backgrounds.
- Highly organized, systematic, and time‑management capable.
- Professional fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
- Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Willingness to travel when needed.
- Legally able to work in Indonesia.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in geography, geodesy, forestry, or related field.
- Experience in coursework of forestry, land use management, nature‑based solutions, social issues, and sustainable development.
- Proven extensive experience in geospatial modelling for carbon accounting and related assessment.
- Familiarity with ASEAN Member States culture and stakeholders.
Contract Arrangement
Full‑time with a fixed‑term employment agreement up to 31 December 2026, preceded by a 3‑month consultancy contract.
