Job description
Operational Management & Production Oversight

Supervision of Machine Shop and delegation of responsibilities where necessary to Machine Shop Chargehands and CNC Programmer/Supervisor.

Compilation of work order packages for Machine Shop and all other documentation packages.

Review capacity requirements and evaluate the level of operations to meet requirements and advise Planning Dept. of any adjustments required or necessary due to progress on the shop floor.

Negotiate and evaluate pricing on subcontracted services for machining of connectors and advise Operations Manager of preferred subcontractors.

Review processes and procedures to reduce machine times and costs and increase flow rates through the Machine Shop.

Produce weekly status reports on work in progress.

Attend weekly production meetings and internal contract review meetings.

Prepare justification reports for capital expenditure on additional/replacement equipment.

Visit subcontractors to monitor progress, quality, and adherence to procedures.

Conduct monthly briefings with Machine Shop personnel and maintain open dialogue on problems and issues.

Targets & KPI Achievement

Progress all departmental targets and Key Performance Indicators as agreed with Senior Management.

Assist Team and Individual development by completing the annual Appraisal interviews in a timely manner.

Quality Assurance (QA)

Ensure that all QA and departmental procedures are fully implemented and adhered to, maintaining compliance with BS EN ISO 9001:2000 quality standards.

Support internal and external audits, drive corrective actions, and promote continuous improvement within the Machine Shop.

Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)

Ensure all departmental personnel, visitors, and subcontractors fulfil their obligations under the Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental Policy, promoting a culture of safety and compliance.

Pay full attention to:

  • Risk Assessments and COSHH Assessments and adherence to identified control measures.
  • Compliance with all HSE signage and Company PPE requirements.
  • Full participation in Company environmental initiatives, especially waste segregation (paper, metals, wood, oils, etc.) and pollution prevention measures.
Leadership and Development

Lead, coach, and develop the Machine Shop team to achieve departmental goals and enhance technical capabilities.

Conduct annual performance appraisals in a timely manner and use outcomes to identify training and development needs.

Maintain strong, open communication within the team to resolve operational issues and encourage engagement.

Develop self and others within the role to ensure succession planning and continuous improvement.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or an equivalent technical discipline.

Additional qualifications in Production Management, Business Administration, or Lean Manufacturing are advantageous.

Recognized certifications or training in Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) management, ISO 9001 Quality Systems, or Leadership & Supervisory Skills are desirable.

Proven background in CNC programming, machining processes, and workshop management is essential.

Minimum 8–12 years of hands‑on experience in a precision machining, fabrication, or manufacturing environment, including at least 5 years in a managerial or supervisory capacity.

Strong knowledge of CNC and manual machining techniques, tooling, programming, and production optimization.

Proven experience in resource planning, capacity management, and coordinating with planning or scheduling functions.

Demonstrated ability to manage budgets (preferably £500k+ annually) and control departmental costs.

Comprehensive understanding of QA/QC processes and quality standards, including BS EN ISO 9001:2000 (or current version).

In-depth knowledge of HSE regulations, risk assessments, COSHH, and PPE compliance within a workshop/manufacturing environment.

Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems, work order management, and documentation control.
