Job description

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

About us:

We are a vibrant, diverse Department that looks to lead innovation in education and research at one of the world’s leading universities. To support our ambition, King’s has invested in new multi-million‑pound teaching and research laboratories of more than 3000 sqm for the Department at heart of its Strand campus, which opened in August 2022. In moving our ambitions forward, we are continuing to appoint academics to join us in shaping the future of education and research for King’s Engineering. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate education, with a distinctive approach, combining traditional teaching methods with modern, project‑based learning, catering for the needs of our students and the industries in which they will work. It is essential that applicants have the enthusiasm and commitment needed to lead world‑leading researching programmes, while also ensuring the success of these educational programmes.

About the role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with the appropriate disciplinary experience for the post of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Robotics, who is interested in developing an independent world‑leading research group in one of the following areas: UxV, humanoid robots, foundational models for robots, autonomous driving.

In addition to leading their research group, the post‑holder will also play a key role in the continuing development and delivery of modules in robotics for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes offered by the Department of Engineering.

Our Department of Engineering is home to academics whose backgrounds span the entire range of engineering disciplines. As part of this diverse group, we are home to the Centre of Robotic Research, where expertise from mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, AI and systems design are integrated in order to address real‑world challenges through cross‑sector collaboration. In doing so, the academics are enabling sustainable solutions, innovating ethical robotics, empowering future innovators and providing interdisciplinary excellence and global thought leadership.

This position is being established to continue to grow the area of robotics within the Department and the research of the post holder’s group should be complementary to that which is currently established within the department.

Responsibilities include:
  • Establishing a world‑leading research group in a relevant research area (e.g., UxV, humanoid robots, foundational models for robots, autonomous driving)
  • Developing and delivering high‑calibre modules within the area of robotics for both undergraduate and postgraduate Engineering students
  • Actively pursuing external research funding from both governmental funding bodies and industrial partners
  • Leading undergraduate and postgraduate student projects within the Department of Engineering
  • Supervising PhD students and post‑doctoral researchers who are part of your research group
  • Contributing to the administrative duties within the department and/or faculty.
  • Contributing in a positive manner to the culture within the Department of Engineering
  • Demonstrating a proven commitment to equality and diversity.

This is a full‑time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro‑rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7.
