Specialist Occupational Therapist - Oncology B6

Are you a band 6 looking for a static position in an established team? Are you looking to specialise in Oncology and Palliative care? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Occupational Therapist to join our department to backfill maternity leave.

This position is for an experienced Occupational Therapist within our small, but well respected Oncology Occupational Therapy team. The team covers a 54 bed acute oncology and haematology ward. As a band 6 Occupational Therapist you will work under the lead of a band 7 OT. Working as a valued member of the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team your role will include assessment and treatment of patients, prevention of de-conditioning, facilitation of timely and effective patient discharge, and on-going referrals to other agencies. Your caseload will include supporting patients on active treatment, those who are receiving palliative treatment and those nearing the end of their life. You will also have the opportunity to supervise Occupational Therapy Students on placement, as well as contribute to our service development.

The post holder will work Monday to Friday and be expected to work some bank holidays over the year to support both the Oncology and Medical/Surgery OT service. Use of own car for business use is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder assists in the development, administration and provision of a specialist Occupational Therapy Oncology service; carries a varied caseload of patients. Managing complex assessment, with predominantly physical conditions and with regard to the physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual and social aspects of their care.

Job responsibilities

Directly responsible for the management of own caseload of Oncology patients with diverse presentation and complex physical and psychological conditions, referred for Occupational Therapy assessment, rehabilitation, treatment planning and discharge management.Assists in the management of the specialist team providing, developing and planning an Occupational Therapy service to patients for this client group. The post holder will act as a source of expertise, demonstrating and maintaining knowledge, skills and experience in this specialist role.

As a department we are a friendly bunch of therapists who all work together to provide a dynamic and pro‑active service to our patients. We have a range of experience and specialisms ranging from Assistants to Highly Specialist Occupational Therapists providing clinical support, and formal and informal training, and the department benefits from being managed by an Occupational Therapist who provides a strong professional lead. We have a strong commitment to clinical supervision and Continuing Professional Development; you will be regularly supervised by a senior therapist and attend the band 6 Occupational Therapy support groups. You will be supported to engage in service development and encouraged to put forward suggestions as to how we can enhance and grow the services we offer. We have a well‑structured In‑Service Training Programme which the successful applicant will be able to learn from as well as the opportunity to lead sessions with support from your team. We benefit from a well‑stocked gym which can be used by staff either before or after working hours.

Qualifications
  • Diploma/degree in OT by recognised awarding body e.g. Royal College of Occupational therapists.
  • Must satisfy the criteria for full membership of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Further qualifications/Study
  • An approved Occupational Therapy supervisor for OT/PT degree students
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the role of Occupational Therapy for people with a wide range of physical dysfunction.
  • Able to assess for and fit basic equipment to facilitate safe discharge
  • Previous experience relating to specialist area
  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
  • Knowledge of relevant NHS and SS legislation
  • Able to assess for and fit complex equipment and teach patient/carer in the safe use of these
  • Experience with community/mental health conditions
