Our Building Design Practice is seeking an experienced, motivated Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer. This is an excellent opportunity to progress your career in a supportive setting. You’ll work from our Birmingham office, joining a national team of designers across the UK, and collaborating internationally via our Global Technology Centre.

As part of our national Building Design team, you’ll deliver engineering solutions for a broad range of sectors such as Commercial, Residential, Education, and Rail. This client-facing, hands-on role is ideal for engineers looking to develop within a leading consultancy.

We’re committed to staff development and offer tailored growth plans and opportunities to enhance your technical, digital, and project management skills. Our team is focused on energy efficiency and decarbonising the built environment, delivering sustainable solutions for a broad range of clients.

We embrace digital innovation and global collaboration, and we’re looking for someone with strong technical skills and an innovative mindset—ready to contribute to our digital practice and manage diverse teams both locally and remotely.

Your role
  • Interpret project briefs and contribute to mechanical building services design, prioritising sustainable solutions such as energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and passive approaches.
  • Produce calculations using industry-standard tools (Excel, IES, Hevacomp) to support low‑carbon and high‑performance outcomes.
  • Prepare technical specifications with NBS, collaborating closely with the Global Technology Centre and BIM team to integrate sustainable design principles.
  • Represent AtkinsRéalis at meetings, championing sustainable practices with clients and contractors, and conduct site surveys and inspections to ensure adherence to environmental standards.
  • Write reports, maintain records, and ensure compliance with all quality, environmental, and governance processes.
  • Manage personal workload, project delivery elements, and assist with junior staff development, encouraging knowledge‑sharing on sustainable design strategies.
About you
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Building Services/Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards CEng) with CIBSE or IMechE.
  • Proficient with digital tools: IES, Hevacomp, Navisworks, NBS, Microsoft packages.
  • Understanding of energy reduction and decarbonisation methods.
  • Basic knowledge of energy/carbon data analytics.
  • Familiarity with building physics and passive design principles.
  • Experience with measurement, verification, commissioning, and performance evaluation.
  • Background in design consultancy or contractor design environment plus, knowledge of relevant technical standards.
  • Strong reporting and presentation skills; able to manage deliverables and budgets.
  • Willingness to undertake other reasonable duties as required.
