What we do!

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it's so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire's water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region's health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Water Production are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

Water Production is a close-knit dynamic environment, where water is continuously treated across the 50 Water Treatment Works to produce clean and safe drinking water to our valued customers. Water Treatment Works are large manufacturing facilities both with indoor and outside areas, using different chemicals and processes to change the water from reservoir or river water to drinking water, using lots of mechanical and electrical equipment. This is an operational role rather than a design or supervisory type Process Engineer role.

Where you fit in!

As our Process Engineer you will:
• You will be based at a Water Treatment Works, taking care of and completing operational and plant maintenance activities to provide wholesome water to our customers. Task consist of a proactive planned workbasket that include but not limited too, cleaning and calibrating instrumentation, completing Water Quality laboratory checks, fault finding and diagnoses of treatment issues, integrating trend data, cleaning of process tanks, completing small scale pipework repairs, working with electrical and mechanical colleagues to resolve faults and accepting chemical deliveries, all to ensure compliance with water quality standards, environmental regulations and ensure health and safety, and process safety is achieved and managed across all the WTWs
• A key element of the role is chemical and process optimisation of the clean water treatment processes to achieve the water production optimal plan and manage cost. You will lead optimisation activities and share best practice, ensuring that water production service outage is minimised at all times. You will manage asset failure, operational recovery from the field and support cost information monitoring
• You will review Risk Assessments and Methods Statements, issue control of work documentation, adhere to safe systems of work, identify hazards and implement mitigation, update reporting systems to ensure H&S compliance across the WTW in line with Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), Water Quality Requirements (DWI) and the Environment Agency statutory requirements are followed at all times
• You will also play a vital role in completing operational actions on site and providing support during incidents or operational events and ensure they are escalated and managed appropriately
• You will embrace Modernisation ways of working and reducing asset failure through Dynamic Asset Maintenance whilst supporting the new operational asset management system (ERP)

What skills & qualifications you will need:
• The successful candidate will be multiskilled, have a hands-on practical approach. Ideally have previous Water Treatment understanding but this is not essential. A willingness to learn and be self-taught with an understanding or an awareness of regulatory Health, Safety and Environmental obligations. You will be analytical, keen to fault find, with the ability to review data and identify trends and issues
• You will demonstrate rigorous attention to detail, to ensure 'right first time' performance and be proficient in the use of IT systems whilst having knowledge of risk policies and procedures. You will also embrace new technologies, innovation and be open to new ways of working in a fast-paced operational environment
• You will be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a range of key internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues across the business and service partners
• It is desirable that you have previous experience in a commercial orientated and/or regulated environment and previous experience gained within the water or waste water sectors or within the broader utilities, process or manufacturing industry sectors
• As part of this role, you will be required to work within confined spaces therefore any successful candidate must pass strict medical criteria including, BMI, vision, blood pressure, hearing, and Spirometry tests to ensure your full safety when working in hazardous environments
• If you wish to speak with us about any of these tests and how you may be impacted by these then please contact us before you submit an application, and we are happy to discuss this with you on an individual basis
• As this role requires travel to different operational sites, a full, valid UK driving licence is a requirement of the role. We ask that you have no more than 6 points on your driving licence
• Flexibility is key as you will need to respond to out of hours incidents, once fully trained in the role, this is managed on a rota basis

Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it's important to us that we support flexible working patterns and job share options (when we can), to help you make the best of both your work and home life. We know that juggling childcare responsibilities or getting that ideal work/life balance isn't always easy!
