Job description
Locum Specialty Doctor in Adult Psychiatry - SECRHTT (Cygnet House)

The closing date is 04 January 2026

The SECRHTT is based at Cygnet House, Ware and covers the Southeast of Hertfordshire including catchment areas under 3 Community Mental health teams (Holly lodge in Cheshunt, Cygnet House in Ware and Oxford House in Bishops Stortford).

The post holder will work alongside the multidisciplinary team and a consultant psychiatrist allocated to SECRHTT. People receiving services from the community services are predominantly severely mentally ill and so active involvement in the process of care programming is vital. The post holder will be expected to work independently on a day-to-day basis, but with access to consultant.

The successful candidate would be supporting CRHTT consultant and the multidisciplinary team in providing diagnostic assessments and treatment to patients with severe, complex, and high‑risk psychiatric conditions.

2 years' experience within psychiatry is an essential criteria for specialty doctor posts, should you not hold this experience you may be interviewed and considered for an alternative posting which will be different in grade and pay.

Main duties of the job

To undertake clinical assessment, formulate risks and management plans, completing prescriptions under supervision of Team consultant.

To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.

To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly to the Information Department.

To participate in regular supervision with team consultant to ensure skills and competencies relevant to the roles and responsibilities are developed in order to meet the needs of the service users.

To work with multi-disciplinary professional colleagues and local managers in ensuring the efficient running of services and share clinical responsibilities according to competency level with other medical colleagues in the team.

Job responsibilities

To comply with the Trusts agreed policies, procedures, mandatory training and other relevant training, quality improvement and audit processes to ensure high quality service delivery.

Provision of psychiatric expertise to the team.

To undertake outpatient clinics, home visits and participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.

To liaise effectively with primary care and mainstream mental health services.

To have regular clinical supervision with the consultant psychiatrist. It is the post holders responsibility to ensure that this is booked.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Working towards to achieve MRCPsych
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • A minimum of 4 years' full time post graduate training (or it's equivalent gained on a part time of flexible basis)
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience within Psychiatry
  • Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psychosocial perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Clinical experience in a range of services within Psychiatry.
  • Excellent degree of medical knowledge in relation to mental health conditions.
Academic Skills Lifelong Learning
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical problem solving in interdisciplinary areas
  • Possession of good organisational skills
  • Be able to actively listen and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit.
  • Holds a full valid driving license and access to a car (Unless you have a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995).
