Job Description
Here at Hitachi Rail we have a great job opportunity for an enthusiastic self‑motivated Wheel Lathe Technician who thrives in a fast‑paced environment. The position is based in Bristol at Stoke Gifford Train Maintenance Centre.
Salary: £43,375 + 15% shift allowance + £3,000 location allowance. Permanent contract.
Accountabilities
- Maintain the condition of the work site materials and equipment.
- Support health and safety practices in the workplace.
- Prepare for and undertake planned maintenance on the wheel lathe & ancillary equipment.
- Carry out wheel turning for Hitachi and third‑party rolling stock.
- Post operation checks and adjustments.
- Confirm that traction and rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications.
- Provide operational support to fleet staff if lathe duties permit.
- Develop professionally and support good working relationships.
- Learn new skills in accordance with Hitachi’s new business demands as required.
- Liaison with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.
- Prepare for and undertake planned and some unplanned defect maintenance on Hitachi rolling stock assets.
- Confirm that traction and rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications by the use of engineering processes and techniques.
- Prepare for and undertake the removal and replacement of traction and rolling stock components.
- Modify or manufacture traction and rolling stock components by material removal using hand tools.
- Assemble traction and rolling stock components using engineering processes and techniques.
- Install new traction and rolling stock components using engineering processes and techniques.
- Identify, assess and rectify defects and discrepancies on Hitachi rolling stock assets.
- Carry out repairs to traction and rolling stock following technical scopes of work.
- Provide operational support to users of Hitachi rolling stock assets.
- Assist with operational problems as they arise.
Required Skills / Knowledge
- Sound knowledge of and compliance to rules and regulations.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times.
- Good team worker.
Education / Qualifications
- Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) ONC or served apprenticeship with mechanical electrical disciplines.
- Engineering‑based NVQ level 2 and 3.
Desired Skills (not essential)
- Intermediate IT skills typically Word, Excel.
- Milling / Turning / CNC or similar experience.
- Network Rail Sentinel PTS.
- Depot driving and shunting.
- Wheel lathe operations & maintenance.
