Voice Network Engineer - Warwick - Hybrid

We are currently looking for a Voice Design Engineer to be responsible for the design, assurance, and technical governance of voice communication systems delivered over Network Rail's telecommunications infrastructure. The role supports the safe, reliable, and resilient delivery of operational voice services across the UK rail network, ensuring compliance with Network Rail standards, safety requirements and industry best practice. The position plays a key role in modernising legacy voice platforms, integrating IP‑based voice services, and supporting nationally significant rail operational systems.

Key Objectives:
  • Provide skilled IP Network & IP Voice, Telecommunications knowledge enabling:
  • Design of green field IP networks and modifications to existing IP & SDH networks
  • Design of Voice over IP Networks for Voice Concentrator renewals
  • Provide input to the required Migration Strategies- On‑premises Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) to Cisco UCM Cloud
  • Legacy telephone systems to IP Voice solutions
  • Demonstrate security competence to implement suitably secure access controls such as Zero Trust (ZTNA)
  • Modification of live voice network configurations in line with change management
  • Create implementation plans for site works and integration testing
  • Create cutover plans for transition into live environments
  • Provide handover documentation to management centres
  • Update of Network Rail Telecoms design platforms
  • Act as mentor to junior team members on technical matters
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and their suitability for Network Rail
Deliverables:
  • Produce high‑level and detailed designs in accordance with the Rail Engineering Plan
  • Perform reviews to verify designs are compliant to contract technical requirements
  • Design and support migration strategies from on‑premise CUCM to cloud‑hosted Cisco calling solutions
  • Act as a 3rd line technical lead to resolve technical problems
  • Take the lead where required in root cause analysis to drive issue resolution and limit impact to the customer.
  • Creation of design packs in accordance with Network Rail design rules
  • Produce Bill of Materials associated with designs to support implementation phases
  • To be responsible for documentation and upkeep of technical databases
  • Report against programme to relevant Project Manager
  • Attend and present at technical design review (TDR) and Inter Disciplined Check (IDC) meetings as required
Experience:
  • 5 years' experience designing and building IP Voice solutions, ideally to include:
    • Cisco Call Manager
    • CUCM Cloud
    • IP Trade TSS, TPO and Turrets
    • RedBox IP Voice Recorders
    • Acculab Voice Gateways
  • Experience working on Network Rail FTN / FTNx or equivalent carrier‑grade telecoms networks.
  • Familiarity with rail telecoms assurance and governance processes.
  • Project Experience: Proven track record of managing high‑user‑count migrations within a Cisco Collaboration Flex Plan framework.
  • Modern Networking: Understanding of software‑defined networking (SD‑WAN) and hypervisor management (ESXi or Cisco NFVIS) for virtualized voice applications preferred.

  • Cisco CCNP (Voice Specialism desirable)
  • Juniper JNCIP / JNCIS
  • Excellent Knowledge and competency of the Microsoft Suite of applications.
