Job description

This role is based in the UK and will be working on site in our UK based College.

In order to comply with our mandatory pre‑employment checks, the successful candidate will be required to provide original identification documents in person to our UK based People Services Department.

This role is pro rata so the salary you will be receiving is £14,095.8 per annum.

Background to the Post

Technicians provide a high standard of technical and learning support in order to maintain a well prepared and realistic working environment. This role will be essential to the effective delivery of study programmes to young people and qualifications to adults.

Subject Areas Covered

The Technician will be required to support sessions in a range of Art & Design subject areas, and will need sound knowledge of a range of art based disciplines. It would be desirable for an applicant to have a specific skill set in either jewellery, glass or plaster; however the art, design and craft technician will be deployed across a wide range of course areas in the School of Arts and part of a wider Arts team; some of which are assigned to specialist areas. In addition, technicians may be required to deliver sessions on Health and Safety and safe working practices as well as sessions aimed to support learners in exhibiting and presenting their work. We would expect the technician to undertake First Aid training as part of their role and remain a designated First Aider within the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a well prepared, realistic and safe working environment and develop the professional attitude of the students towards their work and give them every opportunity to practice and develop their skills.
• Support the efficient and effective running and development of all aspects of the curriculum, including comprehensive preparation of equipment and workshop areas, demonstrating and supervising students working in the practical skills area.
• Carry out routine maintenance of facilities and ensure the safety, cleanliness and tidiness of the learning areas in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and liaise with external servicing agencies to ensure the continued maintenance of equipment and workshops.
• Maintain an effective stock control system, the storage, ordering, receipt of deliveries and organisation of equipment and materials relevant to the area.
• Support the academic staff to ensure that all students using the workshop facilities receive an appropriate Health and Safety induction in the use of machinery and safe working practices.
• Support the preparation, hanging and completion of exhibition presentation: June hosts the main Arts and Royal Leamington Spa college exhibition in the School of Arts: culminating in a showcase open to the public for two weeks (late June to early July). The preparation in June is Business Critical and holiday/leave will be limited during that specific time period. The exhibition requires all art based technicians to support academic teams and students to hang and curate their exhibition space.
• Assist with any other technical and/or support duties across the Department as may be required from time to time including preparation of open days/career events and to attend team meetings.

Essential Attainments

• A HNC, degree or Higher level or relevant qualification in the subject area
• A GCSE in Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above.
• Previous experience of working within the vocational area: Jewellery / Plaster / Art & Design / 3D / Graphics / Stained Glass
• Awareness of Health and Safety regulations and experience of implementing H&S procedures.
