Job summary

A local council in Manchester is seeking a skilled Windows Server Administrator to manage and maintain the server estate. You will support critical infrastructure while ensuring compliance with best practices in incident and change management. The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge of Windows Server, experience with M365/Azure technologies, and strong fault-finding skills. This position offers a permanent contract with a generous holiday allowance and enrolment in the local government pension scheme.

About The Role

Working Hours: 35 hours per week
Contract Type: Permanent
Closing Date: 11.59pm, 28 December 2025

Responsibilities
  • Identify and resolve issues across the Windows Server estate (physical and virtual).
  • Support and configure DHCP, DNS, Active Directory and Group Policy.
  • Maintain load balancers, SSL certificates and cloud infrastructure.
  • Act as a technical liaison between internal clients and external suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with incident, problem and change management processes.
  • Generate and update technical documentation related to the supported systems.
Qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge of Windows Server OS 2016 upwards, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Group Policy.
  • Experience with M365/Azure technologies including infrastructure configuration, policy and monitoring.
  • Experience with load balancing technologies and hyperconverged solutions (Nutanix).
  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting and data manipulation in Excel.
  • Working knowledge of VMware and physical servers.
  • Strong fault‑finding skills in a complex environment.
  • Experience with IaC scripting (Terraform) and SCOM (System Centre Operations Manager).
  • Qualified to ITIL, or willing to work towards ITIL certification.
  • Familiarity with ITIL framework, including SLA’s, change management and configuration management.
Personal Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work closely with suppliers and within an on‑call rota.
  • Forward‑thinking and adaptable to new technologies.
  • Experience building, maintaining and supporting complex server environments both on‑prem and cloud.
