Overview

Job description
Working in partnership with TAYTO/Golden Wonder in Scunthorpe, we are recruiting a reliable, hardworking Grade 5 Machine Operator to work on night shifts (10pm to 6am, Monday to Friday). The role combines Team Leader and Machine Operator responsibilities, with primary duties operating machine/equipment on the line and providing leadership support to back-fill the line Area Manager when needed.

Role: Machine Operative

Responsibilities include:

  • Be multi-skilled in any one of the Primary and Secondary Packing, Weighing, Automation, Flavouring, Frying or Extruded Machine Operator roles.
  • Operate all machines/equipment in line with training guidelines, with emphasis on health and safety and wearing the correct PPE for each task.
  • Have working knowledge of other machine operator roles and responsibilities and an understanding of manufacturing techniques and processes.
  • Monitor and maintain product quality in accordance with training guidelines and customer requirements, including dates, seals and weight checks.
  • Carry out necessary quality, HACCP, safety and flavour checks, including completing paperwork as required.
  • Optimise machine/equipment set-up, evaluate and correct faults within job authority, escalating issues to the Engineering Department as required.
Team Leader
  1. Health, Safety and Environment: Improve health and safety performance in line with site objectives, legislation, site and company policies; support a culture where losses/accidents are eliminated; raise red flag notices for near miss incidents and follow up with the Health and Safety Department on corrective actions; carry out accident investigations and make recommendations as required; conduct return to work interviews and escalate issues as needed; in emergencies, ensure evacuation, roll call and support Fire Wardens; participate in safety audits.
  2. Quality: Support the Area Manager and line team to promote quality awareness, drive improvements, and strive for 100% Right First Time; oversee quality checks and report/escalate issues promptly.
  3. Efficiency / Customer Service: Assist the Area Manager to achieve the daily shift production plan; monitor throughput and capacity; be audit ready for customer visits and audits; participate in capacity review activities.
  4. Costs: Minimise all cost elements including material conversion/waste, utilities, labour and product; reduce waste via better set-ups, reduce giveaway, reclaim and WIP; optimise labour and productivity against standard through OEE; explore opportunities to reduce labour cost per kilo.
  5. Leadership: Promote respect and credibility; demonstrate a positive can-do attitude; handle employee issues promptly and escalate when necessary; support development of a multi-skilled workforce; communicate effectively to encourage commitment and policy adherence.
