JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher – Special

REPORTS TO: Principal

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching pupils, setting and marking work.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil progress and attainment.
  • Promoting pupil progress and well‑being.
  • Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters.
  • Communicating with parents and external agencies.
  • Participating in meetings, curriculum development and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintaining discipline and health and safety.
  • Participating in public examination arrangements and pupil assessment.
  • Co‑ordinating or managing the work of other teachers and contributing to the selection and induction of probationary teachers.
  • Managing administrative tasks related to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE (ESSENTIAL)
  • beregistered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience of supporting and challenging children with Special Educational Needs.
  • Experience of developing positive relationships, working with a range of professionals and writing Individual Education Plans.
  • Experience of the Annual Review process and use of specialist equipment, facilities or skills.
  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, SEND Code of Practice and safeguarding policy.
  • Current working knowledge of a range of teaching strategies and assessment methods for SEN pupils.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills, proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience of supporting and challenging children of all abilities.
  • Experience of using language programmes such as Makaton.
  • Experience of monitoring pupil progress, performance, target setting and intervention.
