A prestigious North London day school is seeking an able mathematician who is passionate about teaching and can inspire students. The position involves teaching Mathematics across all ability ranges from Year 7 to Year 13, including Further Mathematics and preparing pupils for Oxbridge. Candidates should have excellent A Level grades in Mathematics and a relevant degree. The school is committed to professional development and supports those seeking Qualified Teaching Status. Outstanding achievements in Mathematics are a hallmark of this department.
An able mathematician who is, or is interested in becoming, an inspiring teacher is required for this academically selective, coeducational North London day school from September 2026. The successful applicant will join a large and successful department teaching full‑time across the entire ability range from Year 7 to Year 13; the ability to teach Further Mathematics, STEP and help with Oxbridge preparation is a recommendation.
The successful candidate should be academically well qualified: it is expected that applicants will have excellent grades in A Level (or the equivalent) Mathematics and have taken a degree, or pursued a career, containing a significant amount of Mathematics. The Department has a great deal of experience in successfully training teachers who enter the profession without formal teaching qualifications (including the current Head of Department and several senior colleagues) and in providing suitable opportunities for continued professional development for experienced teachers. The school supports colleagues who wish to gain Qualified Teaching Status.
The department’s teaching style is Socratic: pupils encounter new material through exploration and problem‑solving. We aim for pupils to take real ownership of their Mathematics by ensuring that all new study comes from them. This approach leads to a deeper understanding of the subject and helps pupils become the best mathematicians they can be.
We have 34 specialist Mathematics teachers and Mathematics is the most popular A‑level choice at Highgate. Standards of achievement are high: in last year’s public examinations, 80 % of candidates were awarded an A grade in Maths A Level and 87 % achieved this in Further Maths A Level. We have approximately 200 single Mathematicians and 100 Further Mathematicians in the Sixth Form and a number of pupils make successful Oxbridge applications almost every year. Results at GCSE are similarly excellent, with 90 % of pupils achieving a grade 8/9. About 250 pupils enter each of the UK Mathematics Challenges, with around fifty pupils qualifying for follow‑on rounds. In recent years, we have had pupils placed in the top fifty nationally in both the Intermediate and Senior Olympiads.
Partnership teaching is at the heart of our work as a department, with the equivalent of approximately two teachers’ timetable allocations devoted to working with local Haringey schools. The Mathematics Department has pioneered a number of partnership programmes, including Primary Maths Clubs for years 4 and 5, Mathematics Enrichment days, Maths Circles, Further Maths teaching and university preparation courses. Highgate is also the principal academic sponsor of the London Academy of Excellence in Tottenham, a highly successful Free School, where results place it among the top state Sixth Forms nationally.
