Job description

We are recruiting for this permanent opportunity for a Band 7 Occupational Therapist to join our Neurosciences team, with a primary focus on neurosurgery, extending into neurology too. This is an excellent role for an experienced therapist, passionate about delivering high‑quality care to patients with complex neurological conditions.

Opportunities on the neuro rotation are also available including Major Trauma and Neuro outliers, Acute and Hyper‑Acute Stroke, Neuro‑rehabilitation and Neurology/Neurosurgery.

About the Role

This specialist post is based at Charing Cross Hospital, working predominantly within neurosurgery, including acute inpatient care and post‑operative rehabilitation. You will also provide outreach cover for ITU patients with neurological needs and contribute to neuro‑oncology outpatient clinics, supporting patients through their treatment journey.

Main duties of the job
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care.
  • To provide comprehensive and specialist occupational therapy assessment and diagnosis for adults with a range of highly complex presentations, by utilising advanced neurological assessment, clinical reasoning, evidence‑based knowledge, investigative and analytical skills.
  • To use advanced communication, implementing a range of verbal and non‑verbal skills, with patients and their / carers to motivate, maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure an understanding of their condition.
  • To communicate the complex, condition‑related clinical findings gained from assessment to patients' carers, families and members of the multi‑disciplinary team and other professions.
  • Have responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the in‑patient neurosciences, stroke and neuro‑trauma. Plan and organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management and use of time.
  • To take a lead in the development of the neurosciences, stroke and neuro‑trauma and develop objectives and projects for the team.
  • Within the Therapy Service, to contribute to overall organisational thinking, planning, evaluation and continuous improvement through leadership and membership of various groups. To make recommendations for service development.
  • To develop and use performance outcome measures and audit to monitor the clinical effectiveness of the team.
