Specialist Medical Engineering Technician

Specialist Medical Engineering (EBME) Technician

Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board

The Medical Engineering (EBME) Team support all users of medical equipment in the acute and community hospitals within the Health Board, ensuring that equipment is always safe for use and that it performs as expected, maintaining the safety of both the users and our patients.

Previous experience of specialist medical equipment is essential supplemented with extensive knowledge on the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems. Candidates should also have experience in the supervision and work load planning of other junior members of staff.

The successful candidate will be appraised on a yearly basis, and with a view to develop their knowledge and skills where appropriate.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Undertake highly advanced fault finding and diagnostic testing on complex highly specialistmedical equipment.

Exercise judgement to determine the causes of faults in devices with multiple complex and inter-related systems (e.g. electronic, computer and mechanical systems).

Carry out preventative maintenance schedules on all specialist medical equipment, includingAdult and Neonatal Critical Care Ventilators, Anaesthetic Machines, Hemofiltration Machines, Multi-Parameter, Networked Patient Monitoring Systems and Neonatal Incubators.

Undertake repairs or modifications on highly complex mechanisms and systems down to electronic component level.

Verify that all equipment performs to manufacturer and service specification.

Perform calibration, safety, quality and acceptance testing of equipment.

Maintain a system of control and specialist equipment records as part of an existing ISO9001 certified Quality Management System, ensuring compliance in the areas of work for which the post holder carries responsibility

Participate in regular service meetings and develop/design maintenance procedures/protocols.

Supervise, plan work load and take responsibility for any other medical technical staff or engineers when they are performing work under the post holder's direction.

Supervise trainees and students on placements.

  • Extensive knowledge and practical experience with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems, including implementation, compliance, and continuous improvement within healthcare or medical device environments.
  • Experience mentoring students and junior staff, providing technical guidance and professional development support
  • Experienced in analysing medical device related incidents and producing reports to support collaborative decision-making across multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience supporting audit readiness and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Experience of equipment commissioning and development of new technical procedures
  • Demonstrate experience of the supervision and workload management for any other medical staff or engineers
