Job summary

A regional healthcare provider in Aberdeen is looking for a Consultant Cardiologist for a full-time position. Responsibilities include general adult cardiology, outpatient clinics, and developing nuclear imaging skills. Candidates must have GMC registration and relevant specialist training, with additional skills in Adult Congenital Heart Disease beneficial. Job description
Overview

This is a full-time replacement Consultant Cardiologist post (General Cardiology, Adult Congenital Heart Disease and Cardiac Imaging) based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). The post-holder will join a team of eleven Cardiologists.

About the Department

The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Cardiology, ARI, Aberdeen. NHS Grampian serves a population of 620,000, including patients from NHS Orkney and NHS Shetland. The Cardiology department runs a busy out-patient department with General Cardiology and Chest Pain Clinics, and regular specialist clinics in Complex Heart Failure/Devices, Arrhythmias, Valve Disease, Cardiomyopathies and Adult Congenital Heart Disease. A monthly Familial Arrhythmia Clinic is run in collaboration with Clinical Genetics. Peripheral general cardiology clinics are held in community hospitals around Aberdeenshire and in Dr Grays Hospital, Elgin.

The In-patient Cardiac department comprises a 10-bed Coronary Care Unit and a 30-bed In-patient Cardiology ward in the Emergency Care Centre, and a 12-bed day-case ward near the Cardiac Catheterisation labs. The Echocardiography Department performs around 12,000 Transthoracic Echocardiograms per year, along with Transoesophageal, contrast and Bubble Echo, 3D Echo and Stress Echocardiography (DSE and bike-stress). Advanced Cardiac Imaging modalities are available, including Coronary CT, Cardiac MRI, PET, Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy (approximately 1,200 scans/year), MUGA and DPD scanning for Cardiac Amyloid. Regular Echocardiography review meetings discuss difficult or interesting cases.

Responsibilities
  • General Adult Cardiology Receiving (currently a 1:11 basis) including weekend ward rounds.
  • Three outpatient clinics per week, including a general cardiology clinic and two Adult Congenital Heart Disease clinics (supported by a specialist nurse). Peripheral clinics may be included.
  • If not accredited in nuclear myocardial perfusion scintigraphy, a commitment to develop these skills during the post to support department succession planning.
Qualifications and Registration
  • Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required (licence must be in place prior to starting).
  • UK-trained applicants should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within six months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from date of interview.
  • Alternatively, applicants may possess a CESR / CESR (CP).
  • Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive appointment is made. Locum employment may be followed by an application to obtain CESR / CESR (CP) and entry onto the Specialist Register.
