Overview
Role
All Band 6 Charge Nurses are to assume responsibility for a specified area/areas of practice and will feed back to the Senior Charge Nurse/ Matron at meetings or as required, ensuring the continued development of clinical practice within the Unit.
We are recruiting for Ward 7B, Department of Medicine for Older People, a general medical ward specialising in older people with 27 beds. We are looking for an experienced nurse to join our senior team within a well-established, committed multi-disciplinary team.
Responsibilities

- Student Development; provide leadership, management and team development as delegated by the Department/Ward Manager; allocate workloads
- Contribute to setting goals and benchmarking standards of care; develop tools to improve quality of service and co-ordinate clinical services across the ward
- Coordinate and manage patient flow within the unit including timely admission and discharge, aiming to meet national targets where possible
- Promote the unit and the Trust positively to patients, relatives and the local population
- Have knowledge of relevant national and local health policies and their impact on the service
- Inform/escalate to the Department/Ward Manager or Matron if acceptable levels of care, standards, practice and patient safety are compromised and develop appropriate actions
- Assist and/or lead in development/implementation of local and trust policies and protocols relevant to the specialty
- Manage control and quality of stock and equipment; promote economic use of resources
- Attend corporate groups as a representative of the directorate and team
- Represent the clinical area on working groups at regional and national levels as appropriate
- Promote and deliver effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team and other wards and departments
- Participate in business planning to identify areas for service development and improvement
- In the absence or as delegated by the Department/Ward Manager, initiate and coordinate investigations of incidents, accidents and complaints involving staff, patients and visitors; lead investigations as required
Clinical Management
- Provide senior nursing advice and support to facilitate high quality, individualized care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
- Manage and coordinate complex clinical situations, taking appropriate action in emergencies
- Be clinically competent and confident in the use of specialized equipment in varied clinical settings
- Act as a clinical role model and leader, providing daily unit management and a high standard of nursing care
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care programmes; seek evidence-based practice to improve care quality
- Contribute to setting and monitoring standards of nursing care within the ward
- Liaise with medical staff and other disciplines on managing high-quality patient care
- Ensure patient care delivered within the Nursing and Midwifery Scope of Professional Practice and Code of Professional Conduct
- Promote involvement of patients and relatives in care management and evaluation
- Shared responsibility for delivering patient care by all nursing team members on the unit
- Maintain safe custody of drugs with compliant checking, witnessing and administration procedures
- Undertake training to expand relevant clinical skills
- Regularly take charge of the clinical area, manage resources effectively, and maintain safe staffing levels for shifts
- Identify clinical risks and implement actions in line with Trust risk management policy
- Ensure nurse documentation is maintained to Trust standards
People Management
- Assess and develop action plans to meet individual development needs
- Participate in orientation programmes for new nursing staff
- Monitor staff performance and participate in Individual Performance Appraisal and revalidation support
- Encourage and motivate staff in personal and professional development
- Deploy and utilise staffing resources effectively and efficiently
- Support team members and refer to appropriate services
- Assist in selection, appointment and induction of new staff
- Ensure staffing levels and skill mix reflect workload and patient needs
- Assist in coordinating and monitoring off duty, annual leave, sickness and absence
Leadership Development
- Promote an environment conducive to learning
- Participate in staff education and development, including orientation and supervision; act as mentor and resource for learners and the nursing team and multi-professional teams
- Contribute to a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors
- Assess learning and development needs of ward nursing team
- Support specialty-based teaching programmes and ensure learning objectives are achieved
- Maintain own personal development for revalidation
- Responsible for continuing professional development and performance of a delegated staff group
- Supervise and support junior nurses, students and HCAs to maintain high nursing standards
- Share highly specialist knowledge and skills within the Trust and participate in ward patient care where unit allows
- Provide mechanisms for sharing good practice within the ward and trust-wide
Budget Responsibilities
- Ensure effective and efficient use of resources, stock management, and equipment maintenance
- Handle patients’ valuables with safe storage and transport
- Authorize timesheets for temporary nursing and support staff as appropriate
Research and Audit
- Develop and implement methods of auditing nursing practice within the unit
- Promote awareness of current nursing research among unit members
- Introduce and apply research findings to nursing practice where relevant
- Promote and disseminate local/national/international research findings to the ward
- Identify areas for local audit, conduct the audit and analyse data with support
- Arrange collection and analysis of audit/research data as required
- Participate in data collection to contribute to patient care improvements
Personal Development
- Ensure ongoing continuing professional development and identify development needs within the Trust knowledge and skills development review process
- Identify areas for self-development and training needs in performance planning and development review
- Maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for development and revalidation
