Role Description

Sessional Optometrist

Location: London School or Schools

Salary: £250 per day + Benefits

Hours: 1 day a week (school term time only)

SeeAbility is established as the leading national eye care expert for people with learning disabilities. As a Specialist Registered Charity, it has over 220 years’ experience supporting people with visual impairments, learning disabilities, autism, or complex support needs.

What you bring

To be part of SeeAbility’s NHS England commissioned Special Schools’ Eye Care team in a London school or schools. You will be responsible for regular visits to the same school(s) with a Dispensing Optician partner during school term times only. SeeAbility will provide training to all successful applicants.

Your responsibilities include:

  1. Providing specialist eye care and vision information in schools to meet NHS England’s Service Specification.
  2. Undertaking SeeAbility’s Special Schools Eye Care Team training.
  3. Communicating appropriately with children who have complex needs.
  4. Sharing sensitive information with patients’ relatives or carers, often with barriers to understanding.
  5. Managing your caseload using evidence-based practices.
  6. Making independent clinical decisions where opinions may differ.
  7. Liaising directly with parents and schools, using secure NHS mail and GDPR-compliant methods.
  8. Referring children for spectacle correction and providing spectacle dispensing services when needed.
  9. Prescribing and advising on eye drops.
  10. Demonstrating physical skill in using diagnostic equipment.
  11. Collaborating with other agencies and healthcare professionals.
  12. Documenting all interactions accurately.
  13. Producing written reports of clinical outcomes within 5 working days.
  14. Sharing clinical information securely.
  15. Referring children for further management when necessary.
  16. Transporting equipment between sites.
  17. Acting independently in patient management, ensuring safety and infection control.
  18. Maintaining good communication with team members.
  19. Assisting in risk assessments and mentoring new team members.
  20. Participating in team meetings and training.
  21. Adhering to health and safety regulations and reporting incidents.
  22. Reporting absences promptly.
  23. Engaging in personal and professional development.
  24. Delivering training sessions annually.
  25. Supporting evidence-based practice and clinical excellence.
  26. Conducting clinical audits.
  27. Maintaining IT systems and clinical records securely.
  28. Supporting the UK Vision Strategy.
  29. Staying updated on developments in eye health and disability legislation.
  30. Upholding diversity, confidentiality, and safeguarding policies.
  31. Undertaking other duties as instructed.
