Overview

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The Trust is continually upgrading facilities, including a new integrated critical care unit (completed 2018), extension of a Neonatal Unit, and an approved plan to build a brand new Emergency Department which commenced in 2021.

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Management Accountant to join the Financial Management team at Walsall Healthcare Trust, taking the lead with one of our key Clinical Divisions and supporting the attainment of the Trust's financial performance. The post holder will provide financial support and advice on behalf of the Deputy Divisional Business Accountant to a Division with a budget of circa £50-60m. The support will involve dealing with complex, emotive and contentious issues and will require constraining managers to ensure financial targets are met. The post holder will advise managers and Directors on how to maximise the effective use of finance and other resources to drive efficiency and service improvement. They will be key to developing commercial awareness across the clinical divisions and will understand the linkages between financial and other performance targets.

• Produce Monthly Management Accounts for the Services supported and present these positions at regular meetings.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of community services. The Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Ensure divisions are fully aware of all aspects of financial control, probity and stewardship, including standing financial instructions and standing orders. Ensure that the division's financial records provide a true and fair view and meet the Trust's corporate reporting requirements, external statutory returns, accounts, policies and legislation.

Qualifications

• Part qualified CCAB Accountant (in final year of study), with relevant experience in financial management or AAT/CCAB equivalent
• Educated to A-level or equivalent

Experience

• Previous experience of working in a management accounts role
• Previous experience of working within an NHS Finance department

Desirable criteria

• Substantial experience in the accountancy profession

• Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
• Experience of business planning and budget setting processes
• Experience of supervising and training junior staff
• IT literate with ability to design and use spreadsheets and databases
