Job description
Purpose of the role

Provide general legal advice to all departments and project teams within the bank.

Carry out regular horizon scanning to identify legal changes relevant to the bank.

Proactively identify and manage legal risk.

Support the General Counsel in their duties.

Ensure contractual documentation and customer communications contain all relevant legal content in an easy-to-understand style.

Assist the Product Management team to bring legally compliant products to market.

Ensure legal risks are considered on projects which impact the customer experience.

Provide prompt and pragmatic responses to front-line colleagues’ queries in order to facilitate excellent customer journeys.

Role Responsibilities

Provide general legal advice to all departments and project teams within the bank.

Provide oversight of customer contractual documentation and certain customer communications.

Create and review precedent legal agreements.

Negotiate commercial contracts with the bank’s suppliers.

Liaise with external lawyers and insolvency practitioners to ensure the bank obtains sound, pragmatic legal and insolvency-related advice.

Carry out regular horizon scanning to identify legal changes relevant to the bank.

Pro-actively identify and manage legal risk.

Maintain and update the Legal team’s Risk & Control Self-Assessment.

Build a strong network of internal relationships and develop a deep understanding of the bank’s business model and strategic priorities.

Oversee the management of problem loans from default until recovery.

Act as the data steward for legal data, responsible for ensuring data management best practice is embedded within the legal team.

Provide non-legal colleagues with training and know-how on legal topics.

Assist the General Counsel in their duties.

Necessary experience or qualifications

Qualifications

  • BA/BSC/LLB degree or equivalent experience
  • LPC qualification
  • Must hold a current practising certificate
  • Post Qualification Experience (PQE) 5 plus years, in a top law firm and/or in-house

Background and experience necessary

  • In-depth knowledge of banking law
  • Working knowledge of regulatory, company, and commercial law
  • Experience working in-house (may include secondments from private practice)
  • Transactional banking experience (ideally in the high-net-worth space)
  • Ability to deliver sound, pragmatic legal advice
  • Experience working on contentious matters desirable
  • Experience negotiating, drafting and advising on commercial contracts
