Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer - Building Services

Location: Newport (office + site attendance)
Salary: 50,000- 60,000 (DOE)

Overview

A growing building services team is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to take a leading role in delivering technically robust electrical designs across a mix of commercial, education, healthcare and refurbishment projects. You'll join a compact, close-knit design group where your expertise will directly influence project outcomes and support a smooth transition from design through to installation. You'll be working as part of a three-person design function that includes a senior mechanical engineer and a graduate mechanical engineer, with collaborative support from in-house BIM/modelling staff and project managers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and develop consultant-provided designs (typically RIBA Stages 3-4).
  • Carry out due-diligence tasks such as electrical calculations, load assessments, compliance checks and technical validation.
  • Work closely with BIM technicians to ensure coordinated, clash-free, integrated MEP designs.
  • Act as the primary electrical point of contact for project managers and site teams, addressing technical queries and design-related issues during construction.
  • Attend site visits to support design handover, resolve technical questions, and maintain design integrity during installation.
  • Produce high-quality electrical design documentation, reports, specifications and schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK standards, building regulations, safety requirements and industry best practice.
  • Support internal continuous improvement, sharing knowledge with junior team members when needed.
Required Experience & Skills
  • 7-10 years of electrical engineering experience within building services, either in a consultancy or a design-focused contractor environment.
  • Strong background in electrical systems design: power distribution, lighting, containment, LV systems, emergency systems and associated infrastructure.
  • Confident producing and validating calculations, using design software and assessing third‑party designs.
  • Strong coordination skills - comfortable working with BIM/M&E teams and understanding how electrical design interacts with mechanical and architectural disciplines.
  • Clear, concise communication skills suitable for client, project‑manager and site interactions.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a small team while managing changing project priorities.
  • Familiarity with sustainable, efficient, and modern building‑services practices.
Desirable Attributes
  • Experience supporting projects from design to installation within a contractor or D&B environment.
  • Knowledge of energy‑efficient systems or low‑carbon design principles.
  • Chartership or working toward professional registration (e.g., CEng, IEng) is advantageous but not essential.
  • Comfortable working across diverse project types and juggling multiple project stages.
What's on Offer
  • Competitive salary reflective of senior experience.
  • The chance to step into a role with visible impact, working directly with project managers, BIM teams and site delivery teams.
  • Exposure to delivery‑focused projects where designs are carried through to installation - offering a full project‑lifecycle experience.
  • A supportive, close-knit design team with opportunities to take ownership and broaden your technical influence.
