Overview

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications from highly motivated and suitably qualified individuals to the role of Senior Clinical Fellow in Shoulder and Knee Arthroscopy/Reconstruction Surgery. The closing date is 22 October 2025.

The post aims to provide specialist training for individuals who have either completed a UK training program and possess a CCT or equivalent training. The fellowship will provide exceptional training in current techniques in shoulder and knee reconstruction. The arthroscopy unit consists of 7 arthroscopy surgeons (1 shoulder, 2 knee and 4 shoulder/knee) allowing the fellowship to be tailored to individual needs. The Fellow will gain experience in all aspects of arthroscopic shoulder surgery as well as arthroscopic knee surgery.

As well as complex shoulder Arthroplasty, a full spectrum of soft tissue knee reconstruction is undertaken within the unit, including multi-ligament reconstruction, cartilage regenerative procedures, corrective osteotomy, and patello-femoral realignment/stabilization. Unicompartment, Patellofemoral, Primary and Revision Knee replacement surgery will also be undertaken.

Main duties of the job

The fellow, dependent on experience, will have the opportunity to undertake independent supervised operating lists and attend outpatient clinics. There will be opportunity to undertake research and audit. Involvement in an ongoing or new research project is to be a major part of this post. The post holder will be expected to undertake presentations and produce publications based on their work.

The appointees will undertake clinical duties at the same level as the Trust's senior SpR trainees and additional duties commensurate with their individual skills. The appointee will work under the supervision of the Consultants within the Arthroscopy service and will undertake clinic and operating theatre sessions as described in the job plan.

The specific attachments will be agreed with the appointee at the time of interview. As far as possible, attachments will be provided commensurate with the individual's special interests and/or training needs.

The appointee will also have the opportunity to undertake research in the appropriate orthopaedic speciality. There is a well organised teaching timetable for the academic year which runs from late August to April.

Job responsibilities

The Fellow will be expected to take part in the on-call rota

Clinic and operating theatres times may vary depending on availability and opportunities exist to join other surgeons in theatre and/or clinic to maximise experience of knee and shoulder arthroscopy.

Teaching

The post holder will be encouraged to participate in post-graduate medical education as well as the teaching of medical students.

Research

The post holder will be encouraged to undertake research, collaborative research projects and research relevant to the delivery of the clinical service as outlined above and agreed with the Director of Research.

Audit

The post holder will be expected to play an active role in the Hospital\'s clinical audit programme in accordance with criteria set by the Trust and by the Royal College of Surgeons.

Continuing Medical Education

The post holder will be expected to undertake continuing Medical Education along the lines recommended by the Royal College of Surgeons. This will involve participation in internal meetings and external CME by arrangement with the Medical Director.

Induction

It is the responsibility of every employee to participate fully in induction in both Trusts. A Trust wide induction course is held monthly and an induction pack is available from the Human Resources Department. A formal induction to the unit will be arranged by the Clinical Director/Clinical Lead and a Consultant mentor will be appointed. This will be in addition to the development programme addressing governance and leadership in the Trust.

Appraisal and Performance Management

All staff will be expected to fully participate in the Appraisal/Performance Management process. This obligation will include the preparation for and attendance at appraisal/performance management interviews and completion of the associated documentation.
