Main duties of the job

These unique posts spend approximately 50% of the clinical time in PHEM* roles either working with the well-established Physician Response Unit or gaining experience with pre-hospital critical care with EMRTS Wales on the Wales Air Ambulance. The Physician response unit has been running since 2015 and is an award-winning collaboration with the Welsh ambulance service. Its focus is to bring the ED to the patients home by self-tasking senior decision makers to 999 calls which may be suitable for management in the community. The PRU also responds to RED calls as part of the local 999 response and works collaboratively with the other local community services. The current PHEM fellows are heavily involved in service development and quality improvement and this would be an integral role for future recruits.

The other c50% of the time is working on the registrar tier at the GUH ED - The department has a good track record of developing senior EM doctors and support will be given to work towards gaining an ST post or Specialist Registration via Article 14. The department has recently supported 2 Specialty and Staff Grade doctors through the Fellowship Examination (FRCEM).

Applications from CCT holders would also be very welcome. The job plan can be adjusted by mutual agreement to provide suitable clinical and managerial experience for those about to embark upon a Consultant career.
