Job description

This role requires the successful candidate to be based in the UK and have working knowledge across UK Transmission & Distribution systems at least 5 years.

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Cable Design Engineer specialising in High Voltage (HV) Transmission & Distribution (132kV to 400kV) systems to join our consultancy team in the UK. The successful candidate will support a range of projects across the transmission and distribution sector, delivering design solutions for utility, renewable, and infrastructure clients.

This role will involve working on complex underground cable systems, including route assessments, thermal ratings, system design, and interface management with other engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver end-to-end cable system designs for transmission networks (132kV to 400kV), in accordance with UK and international standards (e.g. BS EN, IEC).

  • Perform route selection studies, cable rating analysis (using tools such as CYMCAP), and detailed engineering design.

  • Prepare and review cable system specifications, design reports, technical drawings, and construction documentation.

  • Collaborate with civil, electrical, and geotechnical teams to ensure integrated design solutions.

  • Provide technical input into project planning, procurement, and construction phases.

  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and quality regulations, and client requirements.

  • Conduct site visits and surveys to assess installation environments and constraints.

  • Support tendering and bid preparation activities by providing accurate scope, estimations, and risk assessments.

  • Liaise with DNOs, TOs, EPC contractors, and equipment manufacturers.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (Chartered status desirable).

  • Proven experience in high voltage underground cable design, ideally within a consultancy or utility environment.

  • Strong understanding of cable systems (XLPE, oil-filled, etc.) and accessories (joints, terminations, link boxes).

  • Proficient in cable rating software (e.g., CYMCAP, ETAP, or similar).

  • Familiarity with UK transmission/distribution standards and regulations (e.g., ENA, NGESO specifications).

  • Strong technical report writing and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a client-facing environment.

  • Experience with GIS-based routing and CAD tools is a plus.

Desirable Qualifications & Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of civil engineering aspects of cable installation (e.g., trenching, ducting, HDD).

  • Familiarity with renewable energy connections (onshore/offshore wind, solar) and battery storage projects.

  • Experience working with National Grid, DNOs, or private network operators.

  • Understanding of cable system reliability, condition assessment, and asset management
