Protect the Future of Power Systems at Siemens

Position: Applications Engineer - Protection

Location: The role is based out of our Hebburn office, but we are led by our forward thinking hybrid working policy. The role will require the flexibility to travel to customer sites when required, but the majority of the role is based from the Hebburn office.

Reports to: Principal Engineer/Engineering Manager

About the Role

Are you passionate about power systems and making a real impact on critical infrastructure? As an Applications Engineer - Protection, you'll be at the heart of designing and implementing protection systems that keep the UK and Ireland's energy networks running safely and reliably.

This is your opportunity to combine technical expertise with customer engagement, working on cutting-edge protection technology while building meaningful relationships with clients across transmission and distribution networks.

What You'll Do
  • Design & Configure protection systems for transmission and distribution networks using Siprotec 5 and Reyrolle devices
  • Develop Solutions through relay logic design and configuration (CFC, Reylogic Express)
  • Support Customers with comprehensive training and technical guidance, ensuring they get the most from their systems
  • Collaborate with project engineers and sales teams to deliver solutions on time and within specification
  • Ensure Compliance by handling type registrations and ENA assessments for both transmission and distribution operators
  • Lead Technical Discussions with clients, attending meetings and site visits to ensure technical excellence
  • Contribute to Tenders by providing expert technical input for competitive, proficient solutions
  • Conduct Testing including FAT/SAT and secondary injection testing using industry-standard equipment
What We're Looking For
  • Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering
  • Solid understanding of high voltage power system calculations and excellent attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and call-handling abilities
Highly Valued
  • Knowledge of Siprotec 4/5 and Reyrolle protection devices (we'll provide training if needed)
  • Experience with communications networks (IEC61850, IEC 60870-5-103, Profibus, Modbus, DNP3.0)
  • Secondary injection testing experience (OMICRON or similar test kits)
  • Programming language skills
  • Familiarity with competitor protection products
  • Experience in substation design and configuration
