Overview

Are you ready to build on your skills and support a busy haematology team?

We're recruiting on behalf of Western Health and Social Care Trust to add Science Assistants to their Enniskillen hospital.

As a Science Assistant, you will work with the Clinical Lead Pathologist and General Manager Pathology to ensure the provision of a high quality, cost effective and efficient laboratory service

The role

• Perform and support routine laboratory procedures, including sample preparation, manual diagnostic testing, and interpretation of results, ensuring accuracy and compliance with standards.
• Prioritise and manage workload, handling urgent samples in line with key performance indicators, while escalating issues to senior staff as appropriate.
• Operate, monitor, and maintain laboratory equipment, performing quality control checks, decontamination, waste disposal, and ensuring adherence to health, safety, COSHH and HTM requirements.
• Accurately record, process, and store patient and laboratory information using approved systems, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with GDPR.
• Support the development of colleagues through induction, training, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, whilst undertaking personal development to maintain competencies.
• Prepare, package, and dispatch samples for referral and research trials in compliance with regulatory guidelines, liaising with clinicians and service users regarding sample acceptance and transport requirements.
• Contribute to the delivery of a continuous 24/7 laboratory service, participating in weekend, bank holiday, and extended rota duties, whilst maintaining effective teamwork and communication across all levels.

The Person

As the successful candidate you will have the following background and experience:

Essential:

• 5 GCSEs including English and one science subject.

OR

• Previous experience working in a similar role.

• Knowledge and awareness of lab safety.
