Job description

We are looking for a Science Technician Apprentice to join our School Science Faculty via South West Apprenticeship Company. This role involves supporting the Science Faculty by preparing materials and equipment for practical lessons, maintaining stock and lab equipment, and ensuring safety and smooth operations.

During the apprenticeship, you will study towards a Laboratory Technician (Level 3) qualification with day release every 3 weeks at North Star Campus of New College Swindon. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on lab experience, learn from experienced technicians and teachers, and inspire young scientists.

Responsibilities include:
  • Preparation of materials and equipment for science lessons: collecting apparatus and chemicals, preparing solutions, checking components, arranging apparatus, setting up experiments, liaising with staff, returning equipment, and maintaining or arranging repairs.
  • Routine maintenance of laboratories and prep rooms: switching mains services on/off, cleaning, tidying, storing materials safely, and caring for plants and safety equipment.
  • Maintaining stock of materials: taking stock, writing orders, and checking deliveries.
  • Health and safety: advising staff, assisting with practical activities, and ensuring chemical use and disposal follow guidelines.
  • Support for the school: attending meetings, training, setting up for events, assisting with trips, and supporting the Science club.
  • Supporting teachers and pupils: assisting during practical work, constructing apparatus, handling reprographics, developing storage systems, and organizing display work.
Qualifications and skills:

GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science (grades 5-9/A*-C). Desirable: A Levels or BTEC in Science subjects. Skills needed include communication, IT, organization, problem-solving, teamwork, initiative, adaptability, and reliability.

Hours:

Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, term time only, 35 hours per week.
