An independent veterinary group in Huddersfield is seeking a Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon with a special interest in rehabilitation, pain management, or sports medicine. This is an exciting opportunity to advance a career in a progressive practice that combines state‑of‑the‑art facilities with genuine personal care.

About the Practice

As the only independent veterinary group in Huddersfield, the practice operates a thriving multi‑centre mixed service with 44 vets across six surgeries. Constantly evolving and upgrading, the team prides itself on high clinical standards and a strong community ethos.

The successful candidate will join a supportive 7‑vet team at the charming village branch that houses the Animal Rehabilitation Centre, established in 2008. This purpose‑built facility helps patients recovering from surgery, living with chronic arthritis, neurological or spinal conditions, or rebuilding fitness and muscle tone. Equipment includes two underwater treadmills, therapeutic ultrasound and laser units, electrotherapy for pain relief and muscle maintenance (TSE, TENS, NMES), and a wide range of exercise equipment.

The Role

This position blends first‑opinion small‑animal work with the chance to develop specialist skills in rehabilitation, pain management, and sports medicine. Professional development is actively supported, with funding and encouragement for CPD and certificate study to help you achieve your career goals.

The Team

The practice director is a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner and qualified veterinary acupuncturist whose passion for advanced rehabilitation and sports medicine sets the tone for the whole team. Highly trained RVNs—many pursuing further rehabilitation qualifications—work alongside auxiliary nurses and an experienced support crew. The wider veterinary network includes certificate holders in diagnostic imaging, surgery, ophthalmology, and ECC, creating a rich environment for collaboration and learning.

Working Pattern
  • 4‑day week (8:15 am – 6:15 pm)
  • 1 in 4 Saturdays (9 am – 2 pm)
  • One late shift (10:15 am – 8:15 pm) every two weeks
  • Around 1:9 daytime weekends at the hospital
  • No routine night work, thanks to a dedicated 3‑vet night team

A recent move to an earlier weekday finish demonstrates a strong commitment to work‑life balance.

Culture & Social Life

Staff retention is excellent, with many colleagues remaining since their training days. Regular clinical clubs, in‑house CPD sessions (with food and drink), group dog walks, pub trips, and an annual Christmas celebration all foster a friendly, relaxed, and collaborative atmosphere.

Location

Set in scenic West Yorkshire, Huddersfield offers the best of town and countryside living. The Pennines, Marsden Moor, and countless opportunities for hiking, cycling, paddleboarding, and even paragliding are all close by.

Package & Benefits
  • Salary £44,000 – £60,000, dependent on experience
  • 6.6 weeks’ holiday, including bank holidays
  • Funded CPD with certificate support
  • Professional fees paid (RCVS, VDS, BSAVA, BVA)
  • Visa sponsorship available
  • Relocation assistance for accommodation
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Enhanced maternity, adoption, shared parental leave, and sick pay
