Regional Sexual Health Outreach Support Practitioner

This post is open to employees of the five LAASP organisations. As part of your application, you will be asked to confirm that you are a current employee of The Clatterbridge Centre, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Liverpool University Hospitals, Liverpool Women's Hospital or, The Walton Centre.

The key purpose of this role is to ensure the quality and content of the axess Outreach service offer is both equitable and accessible across the whole axess region. Particular focus will be given to those areas outside of the Liverpool City Centre area, within the axess regional footprint. An important factor will be to take into account the variety of needs demonstrated by each regional demographic. This role will aim to empower vulnerable groups within local communities to make positive choices regarding sexual health and relationships. Focus on reducing the incidence of; sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies including teenage pregnancies, the transmission and late diagnosis of HIV are also core components. The post holder will undertake asymptomatic screening including assisting patients to take self‑taken tests for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, performing venepuncture to collect blood tests for Syphilis, Hepatitis and/or HIV Ab/Ag screening. The post holder will also need to be competent in assessing patients for HIV testing and be able to perform HIV testing as appropriate.

Main duties of the job

• Develop action plans to support the implementation of sexual health improvement programmes aimed at vulnerable groups.
• Coordinate the content and delivery of Outreach campaigns, both National and local, as agreed with the Outreach Team members and Senior Outreach Practitioners.
• Work closely with axess Communications Officer, ensuring Outreach events, campaigns and initiatives are adequately represented within the Trust, the axess service and on social media platforms.
• Undertake asymptomatic screening including assisting patients to take Self‑taken tests for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, performing venepuncture to collect blood tests for Syphilis, Hepatitis and/or HIV Ab/Ag screening. The post holder will also need to be competent in assessing patients for HIV testing and be able to perform HIV testing as appropriate.
• Dispense medications as directed by service prescribers through Patient Specific Directives or Patient Group Direction for registered applicants.
• Ensure the accessibility of PrEP (Pre Exposure Prophylaxis) is promoted across the axess service.
• Develop, co‑coordinate and evaluate targeted health improvement campaigns as required.

Job responsibilities

• Work in an outreach capacity to provide sexual health promotion in a variety of settings with a range of clients including vulnerable groups.
• Utilise IT skills for reports, presentations, data collection and analysis and internet communication contributing to day to day administration for the smooth running of the service.
• Through the development of local health promotion plans and via networking and collaboration, encourage good practice in health promotion service delivery.
• Take part in developing the evaluation strategy for the Outreach service, to monitor working practices accordingly.
• Implement national and local policies when relevant.
• Use public health and other data to analyse health needs and the effectiveness of health promotion interventions.
• Undertake small scale research to inform decision making e.g. service user experience of health services and audits.
• Develop, co‑coordinate and evaluate targeted digital platforms to promote and enhance sexual health services across the geographical area.
• Analysis of Public Health reports and evidence reviews to enhance outreach capabilities.
• Work in partnership with local health promotion agencies to improve knowledge of sexual health and uptake of services by young people.
• Remain informed with best practice developments in health promotion, both generically and with specific reference to Public and Sexual Health. Use local networks and national databases to research best practice.
• Work with members of the outreach education team; liaise with clinical staff as necessary.
• Deputise for the Senior Outreach Practitioner in times of absence and annual leave.

Experience

• Demonstrable experience in STI Screening and appropriate blood testing (POCT/Serology) for HIV and other BBV's
• Demonstrable experience of completing service audits and report writing for senior managers within the service and for external Commissioners
• Work with vulnerable groups in community settings, offering sexual health promotion initiatives
• Experience of researching and writing content, as well as delivering training
• Experience of co‑ordinating and leading on community health promotion campaigns

Knowledge

• Awareness of sexual health issues specific to MSM/CSW/BAME
• Knowledge of child protection issues and procedures including aspects involving domestic violence
• Comprehensive knowledge of risk reduction models and harm minimisation interventions in relation to sexual health
• Specifically understands the criteria for PEP, PrEP & vaccination allocations for relevant vulnerable groups
