QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Level: Master’s Degree or equivalent specialized graduate-level training in literacy/reading

Certification or Licensure: Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate. Reading Specialist Endorsement is strongly preferred

Experience Desired: 5 years of successful teaching experience with a minimum of 3 years of experience in literacy coaching, curriculum development, or delivering professional development.

Specialized Knowledge: Required expertise in evidence-based literacy practices (Science of Reading) including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

REQUIRED RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB TASKS

The Regional Literacy Coach’s primary role is to lead and support systemic efforts to improve foundational literacy across ESU 7's constituent districts.

  • Foundational Literacy and Professional Learning Support: Provide systematic and ongoing professional learning for administrators and educators on foundational literacy instruction, grounded in evidence-based practices (Science of Reading).
  • Support districts in the implementation of a strong sequence of explicit and systematic instruction across all components of literacy (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension).
  • Assist schools in the selection and implementation of standards-aligned, high-quality instructional materials for English Language Arts.
  • Support districts in developing and implementing a curriculum scope and sequence for foundational writing instruction.
  • Coach and support teachers in utilizing the Nebraska Multi-tiered System of Support (NeMTSS) framework to identify students in need of intervention, which consists of targeted, supplemental instruction and progress monitoring.
  • Support efforts to ensure all students, including students with disabilities and English learners, have access to high-quality instructional materials and instruction.
  • General Professional Development and ESU 7 Responsibilities: Establishing and Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships; Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time; Communicating; Providing information to staff and districts in written form, e-mail, or in person; and representing ESU 7 to the public and external sources; Making Decisions and Solving Problems; Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and resolve problems in educational settings; Actively practice the ESU 7 belief of authentic collaboration in all work with districts and ESU staff; Contribute to the ESU 7 service planning process using intentional data-driven expertise; Observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources, and utilize technology expectations, skills, and abilities for work activities.
