As Regional Laboratory Manager, you will lead two laboratories, ensuring the delivery of the highest standards of patient care, managing personnel and resources, regulatory compliance, and quality. Your leadership will shape the patient experience and drive progress across our laboratories within the region.
The Role
- Lead two laboratories, ensuring delivery of the highest standards of clinical practice, managing personnel, resources, regulatory compliance, and quality. Approximate split: 80% management, 20% clinical.
- Member of clinic management teams, contributing to strategy and group-wide projects.
- Requirements: at least 10 years of clinical experience, including management roles. HCPC registration is required with extensive knowledge of the HFEA Act and Code of Practice.
- On-site basis at TFP Thames Valley Fertility – Maidenhead and TFP Boston Place – Marylebone.
- Full-time role, 37.5 hours per week, with one day from home.

Roles and Responsibilities
Clinical Skills
- Perform standard embryology and andrology procedures including semen preparation, oocyte collection, insemination via ICSI, fertilisation checks, embryo culture, embryo transfer, embryo biopsy (if required), and cryopreservation of gametes/embryos.
- Recruit, select and screen gamete donors in line with national regulation and TFP policies.
- Ensure all procedures align with TFP Laboratory SOPs.
- Communicate results to patients, explain treatment options and implications.
- Take effective consent from patients.
- Accurately record details of patient cycles in the patient management system and laboratory notes.
- Perform witnessing and traceability in line with national regulation and TFP policy.
Quality Management
- Ensure adherence to TFP SOPs through audits, direct observation, and data analysis.
- Document control laboratory documents, review content, update in line with policies, and distribute to staff.
- Actively manage the laboratory audit programme at both sites, review outcomes, and identify improvement actions.
- Address non-conformities with timely resolution, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventative actions.
- Lead with the Quality Manager/General Manager in responding to patient complaints related to the laboratory area and disseminate learnings to the team.
- Review and analyse KPI data to identify improvements and create action plans.
- Performance manage staff outside KPI limits and provide required training.
- Manage Health & Safety in the laboratory, ensuring risk assessments and appropriate training and equipment.
- Regularly review services for improvement, expansion, and staff/patient satisfaction.
Resource Management
- Ensure equipment is validated, serviced, and repaired in line with policy and regulatory requirements.
- Manage equipment levels and plan capital expenditure across sites.
- Manage consumables usage for cost effectiveness.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels and cross-site cover.
- Manage rotas, leave, and sickness; ensure appropriate skill mix.
- Support the General Manager in budgeting by identifying equipment, staffing, and training needs.
Induction, Training and Performance Management
- Onboard new staff safely and promptly.
- Support and mentor junior staff, including planning and training within the laboratory team and TFP Training Scheme.
- Act as an assessor for the TFP Training Scheme.
- Performance manage staff, including appraisals and competency assessments per policy.
- Ensure adequate staff trained for ICSI, biopsy, etc., per agreement with the Group Director of Embryology.
- Participate in continuing professional development and create development plans for team members.
Regulatory Compliance
- Represent and lead both laboratories at HFEA inspections with senior embryologists.
- Ensure procedures align with national regulation, guidelines, and TFP policy.
- Notifying the regulator of non-compliance, and following TFP notifications where applicable.
- Implement TFP policy decisions in the laboratory.
- Oversee witnessing and traceability; manage cryostore and consent; manage transport of gametes/embryos.
- Support planning, implementation, and reporting of research projects per regulations.
Communication
- Chair regular laboratory team meetings and ensure effective internal communication.
- Attend local clinic meetings and represent clinics at KPI meetings.
- Participate in the clinic leadership team and contribute to strategy, resource allocation, and organizational development.
- Ensure effective cross-functional communication and participate in patient information and marketing events.
- Represent TFP at group meetings, industry events, and conferences as required.
Projects & Organisational Strategy
- Assist the Group Director of Embryology in delivering country/group-wide projects.
- Represent the region in TFP strategy discussions and planning.

- Maintain confidentiality of patient, employee, and company information in line with data protection legislation.

Essential - Education and Qualifications
- Degree in Life Science
- HCPC Registered
- Leadership/Management Qualification
Desirable
- MSc or PhD in Life Science
- RC Path Part 1 or 2
- ESHRE Certificate
Essential Experience and Knowledge
- Minimum of 10 years clinical experience, with management experience
- Strong knowledge of embryology and related scientific evidence
- Familiarity with related disciplines and HFEA regulation, including inspections
- Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control in the laboratory
- Experience with quality management systems, audits, risk management
- Experience in resource planning and staff training/performance management
