Position

AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA is seeking an experienced capital project engineer to join the Project Engineering group. The selected candidate will manage and execute capital projects involving construction or renovation of biopharmaceutical manufacturing space, R&D laboratories, and office space. Specific responsibilities are listed below.

Responsibilities
  • Act as subject matter expert for the Project Engineering Group in renovation, new construction, and installation of facility related equipment.
  • Provide overall management of capital projects through the full project life cycle, including scope management, scheduling, budgeting, and coordinating activities interdepartmentally and with contractors.
  • Develop scopes, specifications, estimates, and standards for facility related projects.
  • Participate in conceptual and detailed design efforts by identifying scope, gathering user requirements, and commenting on design packages.
  • Oversee the overall implementation schedule for assigned capital projects and ensure completion and turnover to internal customers within pre-established deadlines.
  • Deliver periodic project status reports to internal stakeholders according to AbbVie site policies.
  • Manage the procurement process and generate purchase requisitions for project equipment and labor purchases according to AbbVie policies and procedures.
  • Oversee mechanical design of vendor-fabricated equipment, review and approve vendor submittals with internal stakeholders, and prepare/execute FAT and SAT protocols.
  • Review project submittals and RFIs to ensure alignment with AbbVie specifications, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Interact with city inspectors and outside contractors.
  • Oversee on-site contractors for assigned projects, including scheduling around production operations, safety permits, safety oversight, and review/approval of equipment installation during construction.
  • Participate in and conduct regular contractor safety evaluations to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
  • Support startup of new equipment, including commissioning activities, field troubleshooting, and field support to site validation staff.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience with 8+ years of significant engineering experience.

Background:

  • Experience in construction management of utility, process, equipment for biopharmaceutical facilities and R&D lab projects is strongly preferred.
  • General background in interior and exterior commercial construction with understanding of trades to support construction efforts.
  • Knowledge of building, architectural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection codes.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Construction management training is a plus.
  • Candidates should be able to lift 25 lbs and negotiate pipe racks/ladders.
  • PMP certification is a significant advantage.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Teamwork, leadership, and the ability to maintain constructive relationships across disciplines are desired.
  • Demonstrated integrity, reliability, dedication, adaptability, innovation, and self-motivation.

Additional Information
  • The compensation range described below reflects the base pay range AbbVie believes it will pay for this role at the time of posting, based on the job grade. Individual compensation may vary by location and other factors. Salary: $106,500 - $202,500.
  • Comprehensive benefits including paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, and 401(k) for eligible employees.
  • The role is eligible to participate in short-term and long-term incentive programs.
