Job description

An exciting opportunity has become available to work within the Diabetes Podiatry Team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Diabetes MDFT as the Principal Podiatrist for the service.

Our multidisciplinary team currently consists of three Diabetes Foot Consultants and four Diabetes Specialist Podiatrists. Supported by a Vascular and Orthopaedic surgeon, Microbiologists, Consultant Plastic Surgeons, a Podiatry Assistant and an Orthotist providing expert care and review across the outpatient and in-patient setting for ICHT's three sites.

The service looks after complicated diabetes foot disease, from ulceration to complicated Charcot, and high risk patients, including those on hemodialysis and those with renal transplants.

The successful candidate will be HCPC registered, have appropriate experience in working with the diabetic foot at a high level of service delivery within podiatry outpatient clinics, outpatient MDT Clinics and in-patient services.

A proven record in the assessment, diagnosis and management of diabetes foot complications is essential and experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team, along with highly developed clinical skills are desirable. However, applications are welcomed from those that are willing and motivated to develop these skills further, as the department supports continuous professional development and career progression.

Main duties of the job
  • The Principal Podiatrist is responsible for the podiatric management of patients within the specialty presenting to the Imperial College NHS Trust and provides specialist service for patients with active diabetic foot ulceration, Charcot, gangrene and surgical wounds offering in both the inpatient and outpatient services.
  • The post holder is responsible for the day to day running of the diabetic foot clinic.
  • The Principal Podiatrist will assess, prioritise and manage patients, determine clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated, and maintain records as a legally autonomous practitioner. Patient presentation may be complex/highly complex.
  • The post holder provides clinical and professional supervision to junior team members in the form of formal training, clinical reasoning sessions and direct observation of practice.
  • To provide clinical leadership within the speciality including educational, professional and managerial guidance.
  • Undertake the role 'duty podiatrist' responsible for the day-to-day smooth running of the clinic
