Overview

Mid Devon District Council is looking to recruit a Planning Officer to join its high performing development management service. The role involves handling a variety of applications, including householder, minor residential and commercial, prior approvals and pre-application advice. The position is suitable for graduates, postgraduates, or those early in their planning career. You will attend Planning Committee, where relevant, to present your cases, and you will contribute towards a culture of mutual support and development across the team.

Responsibilities
  • Handle a variety of applications, including householder, minor residential and commercial, prior approvals and pre-application advice.
  • Attend Planning Committee, where relevant, to present your cases.
  • Contribute towards a culture of mutual support and development across the team.
  • Analyse planning issues and write high quality letters, reports, and appeal statements, meeting agreed deadlines with support from Principal Planning Officers and Area Team Leaders.
  • Develop and maintain good communication and presentation skills with ongoing support through regular one-to-ones with a Team Leader and access to Continuous Professional Development.
  • Work with a small and friendly team of Planners with all levels of experience.
Location and Development Focus

Mid Devon provides an opportunity to work in an attractive rural area close to the city of Exeter and within easy reach of the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, Blackdown Hills National Landscape and the north and south Devon coasts. The role involves dealing with a range of developments across market towns and villages, with a culture of developing and promoting staff within the team.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • You should have a Planning Degree and have, or be working towards, membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
  • A positive approach to challenges, problem solving, and the ability to use initiative; be able to innovate and seek creative solutions to planning for new homes and jobs and securing delivery of infrastructure.
Development and Expectations

You will develop a sound understanding of the application of planning policy and the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Future development opportunities can be discussed at interview.
