Overview

Job title: Personal assistant (PA)
Location: Central Liverpool
Hours: 33 hours per week on a rota (average) with daytime and overnight shifts, 2:1 daytime crew arrangement, potential overtime. 24-hour coverage required with two people during the daytime.
Pay: £14 per hour (daytime); £10.12 per hour (night time).

Job purpose

To assist with a variety of tasks and support Keith to live his personal and social life according to his wishes and interests. This role may include overnight sleeps.

About the employer

Keith is 69 years old and a keen Manchester United fan. He lives on his own but dotes on his 3 adult children (one of whom lives locally) and his 3 grandchildren. Keith has suffered from Motor Neurone Disease for over 20 years, and it has progressed significantly. He spends most of his time in bed, using his iPad. He needs support with the housework, shopping and his personal needs such as feeding, toileting (using a hoist) and communicating with outside agencies. Keith has capacity, but his speech can be hard to understand. He uses a manual wheelchair to go out, but is mainly housebound at the moment. He now needs to have someone with him 24 hrs per day, and two people during the daytime.

Main duties

These will involve:

Social duties - Going with Keith to medical appointments - Going out with Keith to the shops, barbers’ etc - Contacting doctors, district nurses etc on Keith’s behalf

Personal care

  • Support with all aspects of personal care
  • Supporting with mealtimes, feeding and drinking
  • Catheter care
  • Administering medication
  • PEG feeding

Domestic duties

  • Grocery shopping
  • Cooking and serving meals and snacks, preparing thickened drinks
  • Cleaning
  • Changing linen
  • Laundry, ironing

These duties may vary from day-to-day.

– You need to be able to work professionally with another team member for long periods of time.

– You need to be a mature person who is comfortable having responsibility for his care while on duty.

– You need to be able to maintain and promote dignity at all times.

What you can expect to receive

Induction will be given via paid sessions working alongside another carer. Training is available and can be offered in moving and handling, safeguarding, first aid, safe administration of medication. On-the-job training for catheter care, suction and peg feeding.

Hours of work

Daytime shifts will usually start at 8am and finish at 7pm. These shifts are all 2:1. Overnight sleepover shifts start at 7pm and finish at 8am. Night-time rates of £10.12 per hour start at 10.30pm and finish at 7am. There may be some flexibility depending on other members of the team. Average weekly hours: 33 hours over 3 days on a rota with possible overtime. You need to be able to work weekends and would get every other weekend off.
