Job description

This role is for aregistered paramedic educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) whoacts within their professional boundaries.

The post holder will be an integral part of thegeneral practice team.

The post holder would be required to work Tuesdays and Fridays as part of their role.

Main duties of the job

Paramedic to work independently within their scope of practice in the community, using their enhanced clinical assessment and treatment skills to assess and manage patients presenting with acute presentations which include minor illness or injury, abdominal pains, chest pains and headaches. The role would require face-to-face assessment in Practice and through home visits in the community, and at times in residential and nursing homes.

Job responsibilities

A Paramedic is to undertake the following key responsibilitiesin delivering health services:

  • Workwithin the existing Paramedic Practitioner team and as part of a wider multi-disciplinaryteam at the Practice.
  • Assessand triage patients, including same day triage, and as appropriate providedefinitive treatment (including prescribing medications following policy,patient group directives, NICE (national) and local clinical guidelines andlocal care pathways) or make necessary referrals to other members of theprimary care team
  • Advisepatients on general healthcare and promote self-management where appropriate,including signposting patients to the Practices social prescribing serviceand, where appropriate, other community or voluntary services

Beable to:

  • Performspecialist health checks and reviews within their scope of practice and in line with local andnational guidance
  • Performinvestigatory procedures as required and undertake the collection ofpathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs and othersamples within their scope of practice and within line of local and nationalguidance
  • Toassess, diagnose, treat, refer or signpost patients who present withundifferentiated or undiagnosed condition relating to illness or injury.
  • Supportthe delivery of anticipatory care plans and certain services (e.g.,monitoring blood pressure and long-term conditions in those patients at risk)
  • Providea service for urgent and same day home visits to complement the existing GPhome visits for the practice
  • Performand interpret ECGs
  • Communicateat all levels across Practices ensuring that an effective, person-centredservice is delivered
  • Communicateproactively and effectively with all colleagues across the Practice,attending and contributing to meetings as required
  • Maintainaccurate and contemporaneous health records appropriate to the consultation,ensuring accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated withpatient healthcare with the Practice
  • Communicateeffectively with patients and, where appropriate, family members and theircarers, where applicable, complex and sensitive information regarding theirphysical health needs, results, findings and treatment choices using their advanced clinical skills toprovide education to patients, promoting self-care and empower them to makeinformed choices about their treatment.
  • Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal andwill be in accordance with practice requirements. Personal development willbe encouraged and supported by the practice. It is the individualsresponsibility to remain up to date with recent developments.
  • Participate in continuing professional development opportunitiesto ensure that up-to-date evidence-based knowledge and competence in allaspects of the role is maintained.

Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level in paramedicine or equivalent experience
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council as a paramedic
  • Post graduate qualifications in minor injury/illness and advanced patient assessment

Experience
  • Completed two-year Consolidation of Learning period when a newly qualified paramedic
  • Experience as a band 6 (or equivalent) Paramedic (2-3 years minimum)
  • Has previously worked in a primary care setting or a Primary Care Network
