We are advertising this personal assistant role for our 13-year-old son, who has a diagnosis of Autism, for 4 hours per week plus an additional 2 in school holidays. Hours can be arranged in advance with parents to provide greater flexibility. Initially the PA will build a relationship in the home and then start to access the community with him. He likes trips to the park and trampolining. How he communicates: he uses some words and short sentences to communicate my wants and needs. He is good at using visuals like my choice board and aided language displays – make sure he gains an adult’s attention prior to initiating communication. He has gestalt processing so sometimes his phrases don’t match what he means, learns through modelling. He will need supervision all the time, as I do not have any awareness of danger. I need reminding to look before crossing the road and I have no sense of danger.

Things he likes:
  • Playgrounds
  • Intensive interaction
  • Trampoline
  • Swimming
Things he does not like:
  • Loud noises
  • Other children upset
  • People in my personal space
  • Physical touch from unfamiliar adults
Key Responsibilities
  • Meal Preparation
  • Social + Leisure activities
Training
  • Essential PA Guide
  • Autism / Aspergers
Transportation
